Twitter Gold: Spencer Hubbard’s Career Highlight
What a great moment for a kid who started as a walk-on
It’s probably audacious for us to decide what Spencer Hubbard’s career highlight is. Could it be just making Duke as a walk-on? Is there another moment in his career that he treasures more and will define his Duke role by? Maybe it’s earning a scholarship and having his teammates celebrate that moment with him. We could certainly see that.
Whatever it is, the three pointer that he hit against Illinois, in Madison Square Garden, has to be on the list.
There were two things in particular that we loved about this play. First that the kid had the stones to step up and take - then make - this shot without the slightest hesitation. It was really cool to see his hard work pay off in a moment like that.
And second, his teammates just went nuts. This team is as connected as any we can think of. The 1978 team was really tight. The 1986 team was too and so was the 2001 team. Then there was the 2015 group.
This team is very connected and the reaction to Hubbard’s shot really underscored that.
