O’FALLON, IL — One of the most entertaining, high-energy games from the Bank of O’Fallon shootout was Vashon (MO) vs. Bolingbrook (IL). Both teams played with an insane up and down pace, but it was Vashon who came out with the win, 64-56.

Even though his team fell short, sophomore guard Davion Thompson stole the show, finishing with a game-high 24 points while controlling the offense. Thompson — the 6-foot-2, 160-pound guard — is ranked the No. 28 player in the 2027 class by 247Sports.

“I think I played great and we played great as a team,” Thomson said postgame. “We just had a couple lapses where we had a couple bad turnovers late down the stretch that kind of turned the game and changed the flow of the game. They kept the lead late in the game, so we had to fight back. We fought hard, but they came out with the win.”

This season with Bolingbrook, Thompson is after one thing. And he’s the leader of the team as only a sophomore.

“I know my teammates look up to me, so I just try to lead on and off the court and set an example for them,” Thompson told ZAGSBLOG. “Our goal is to win the state championship. We’ve been working toward that since the summer, so that’s the main goal.”

As far as his recruitment, Thompson holds offers from Bryant, DePaul, Eastern Illinois, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Tennessee and Wake Forest. He’s receiving interest from Iowa State, Michigan State, Nebraska, UConn and Washington and has visited Michigan, Michigan State and Tennessee unofficially.

Here’s the guard’s breakdown of the three schools he’s visited:

Michigan: “I like how the coach [Dusty May], he lets them play free. They have a 7-footer that’s really a guard. So it’s like positionless basketball and he lets them go.”

Michigan State: “They play defense. We went there when they had their madness, so it was exciting. And my friend, Jeremy Fears, he plays for them. So it’s been exciting watching him transition to college.”

Tennessee: “I like how the coach [Rick Barnes] coaches. He holds his players accountable, coaches them hard. He’s a good coach. And he draws plays off the board well. The environment there was just crazy. We went to the football game there when they played Alabama, and they won. So it was just exciting. Great atmosphere they have.”

Thompson describes himself as a playmaker and said that’s his best asset at the moment. He’s working on becoming more consistent with his off-ball defense.

“I feel like not many players have the feel I have,” Thompson said. “It separates me from other people because some people they have all the talent, but if you don’t have the feel than it doesn’t really mean anything.”

His head coach at Bolingbrook, Robert Brost, said it simply: Thompson is one of the best players in the country.

“Offensively he’s uber-talented,” Brost told ZAGSBLOG. “He’s getting better and that’s scary for everybody else. I wouldn’t put a cap on where I think he could go. He works really hard and he’s a good teammate. Those things are really going to help him not only with us, but at the next level as well.”

Thompson isn’t the only hooper in his family. His older brother, Maurice McCullum, played in college and is now coaching at Joliet West (IL). Thompson also has a cool hobby. He likes to fish, mainly for catfish and bass.
