Luka Dončić calls playing with LeBron James ‘a dream come true’
At his introductory press conference with the Lakers, Luka Dončić shared his excitement about partnering with LeBron James
On Tuesday, Luka Dončić was officially introduced as a Laker. This canon event affects the trajectory of the Lakers and the NBA at large.
With vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka answering questions about the trade and Dončić fielding queries on his reaction to being dealt, there was little conversation about what Luka would look like on the Lakers.
However, the new face of the franchise did discuss his excitement regarding partnering with LeBron James.
“It’s like a dream come true,” Dončić said at his introductory presser. “I always look up to him. There’s so many things I can learn from him and I’m just excited just to learn everything. Now, I get to play with him. It’s an amazing feeling.”
While the Lakers lost a generational defensive talent in Anthony Davis, they’ve gained a once-in-a-generation superstar in Luka.
While we haven’t seen Luka and LeBron play together yet, they are an elite duo on paper. They each have career averages above 27 points, seven rebounds and seven assists and the hope is that together they can reach even higher peaks.
“I think we both make our teammates better,” Dončić said. “I think our IQ is very high. I think that’s going to help everybody. But, obviously, I really hadn’t thought about basketball much [in recent] days. I’m just excited to work with him. I work every day here. Every day that goes by is going to be better.”
A determined and focused Luka who is set on proving he deserved better than the fate he was handed in Dallas should horrify the rest of the West.
Add to that a LeBron who wants to “do right” by the Lakers and be a mentor to Luka and you have a recipe for success in Los Angeles. The chemistry will take time to form and with only 35 regular-season games left, it will be challenging to put everything together for a title run in 2025.
Still, both Luka and LeBron are franchise raisers and have had impressive postseason runs before. Now they’ll join forces in Los Angeles and try to win a title as Lakers.
