Prep basketball roundup: Branson boys win showdown against Marin Catholic

Chase Robertson threw down a pair of dunks amongst his 18 points to lead The Branson School boys basketball team to a 58-48 victory against Marin Catholic on Tuesday night.

Robertson added six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks for the Bulls (14-9, 4-2 MCAL), who pulled away in the fourth quarter to go ahead by as many as 16 points. The victory lifted Branson into a second-place tie with MC (11-13, 4-2) through six games.

NJ Gray added 17 points, nine rebounds, and five assists for Branson. Heath French, making his first start in two weeks after returning from an illness, added 10 points and a pair of steals. Thomas Lardner scored four points, pulled down eight rebounds, and had two blocks.

  • Semetri Carr scored 34 points as Redwood moved into sole possession of first place following a 73-53 victory against San Marin on Tuesday night. The Giants (15-6, 5-1) got 18 points and five rebounds from Tyler White. Noah Tanaka added eight points and Brennan Woodley had eight points and six rebounds against the Mustangs (11-10, 2-3).
  • Anthony Tajbakhsh hit a game-winning 3-pointer from the left corner with 4 seconds left to lift San Rafael to a dramatic 59-58 victory against Tam on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs (15-7, 2-3) closed the game on a 28-9 run after Tam held a 47-31 led during the third quarter. Luke Shapiro had 24 points for the Bulldogs and Gio Brovelli scored 14. Tajbakhsh and Will Healy combined to score 18 points for San Rafael. Healy also pulled down 13 rebounds. Sam Newmayer paced Tam (4-14, 1-4) with 21 points. The Red-tailed Hawks built their advantage courtesy of a 3-point barrage by Newmayer, Andrew Ismailer, and Porthos Oliviera.
  • Archie Williams opened the game on a 20-0 run en route to a 77-43 win against Novato on Tuesday. Ephraim Sohn led the way with 15 points and three steals for the Peregrine Falcons (15-6, 3-2), who led 40-14 at the half. Grady Stewart added 14 points and seven assists while Dante Stallone had 12 points and five rebounds against Novato (6-15, 0-5).
  • Sophomore Wyatt Cornett scored a team-high 13 points in  Tomales’ 44-38 home loss to Anderson Valley on Tuesday. Senior Josh Flores added 10 points. The Braves’  Erick Dominguez pulled down 12 rounds, and Ryan Murray grabbed 11, while Cornett pocketed seven rebounds. Tomales (4-8, 2-5 NCL III) is schedule to play on the road against Point Arena on Friday.

Girls basketball

Archie Williams kept busy on Wednesday with a trip to Santa Rosa to face NCL-II leader Sonoma Academy (15-3, 9-0). Reese Patton led the Peregrine Falcons (13-8, 2-3 MCAL) with 14 points en route to a 44-38 victory over the Coyotes. Kaeley Sullivan played well inside to score 11 points, while Carolyn Morris added six.

  • Carly Amborn scored a game-high 18 points as San Domenico fell to University for the second time this season in a 47-41 road loss on Tuesday night. Tosia Konczak added 16 points for the Panthers (10-11, 4-2 BCL West), whose only league losses have come against league-leading University (11-8, 6-0).
  • Tam (9-10, 3-2) moved into the top four in the MCAL standings following a 76-48 win against San Rafael on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs (3-14, 0-6) were paced by Brisa Briseno’s 21 points. Roselyn Mazariegos added nine points while Estefani Pantojas and Jessica Vara scored six points apiece.
  • Marin Catholic honored Izzy McFadden prior to Tuesday’s game against Branson after she eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career back in December in a game against Salesian. MC (14-9, 5-1) went on to win the game 68-39 with McFadden tying for game-high honors with 20 points. Jocelyn Gigounas added 13 points for MC and Simone Claxton added nine. The Bulls (11-10, 2-4) were led by Kate Spaulding’s 20 points and Avery Myerberg’s 12 points.
