Donovan Mitchell named NBA All-Star starter
This will be the sixth time Mitchell has made an All-Star team.
The Cleveland Cavaliers will have at least one representative in San Francisco for the 2025 NBA All-Star Game as it was announced today that Donovan Mitchell has been named an All-Star starter and deservedly so. He’s the leading scorer on the 36-7 first-place Cavaliers. On the season, Mitchell is averaging 23.2 points and 4.5 assists per game on 44.3% shooting from the field and 39.6% from three.
Mitchell joins Jaylen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Jayson Tatum, and Giannis Antetokounmpo as starters in the Eastern Conference. The Western Conference starters will be Steph Curry, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and Nikola Jokic.
With this selection, Mitchell has now been named an All-Star every year he’s been in Cleveland. It’s the sixth year in a row he’s made the team dating back to his time with the Utah Jazz.
This is the second time he’s been an All-Star starter. The first was in his initial season as a Cavalier. With the selection, he’s now the third Cavalier to be named an All-Star starter multiple times. The other two are Kyrie Irving—who did this twice—and LeBron—who did this ten times.
Mitchell will likely be joined by Kenny Atkinson and the coaching staff in San Francisco along with Darius Garland and Evan Mobley. The coaching staff from the team with the best record at the break, provided they weren’t there the previous season, will serve as the coaching staff for one of the teams. Given Cleveland’s 5.5-game lead over the Boston Celtics, that will be made official soon.
Garland and Mobley should make it as reserves. Those will be announced next Thursday, Jan. 30. There is also an outside chance that Jarrett Allen will make the team as well.
The All-Star Game will have a different format this season with a four-team, mini-tournament set up. It will be played on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 8 PM.
