Lakers retired Michael Cooper’s jersey in epic fashion

Michael Cooper will forever be celebrated as a Laker, as his jersey is now hanging inside the rafters of Crypto.com Arena.

Since the Lakers announced the retirement of Michael Cooper’s jersey, this date has been one of the most anticipated on the team’s schedule. The night did not disappoint as Lakers royalty was fully present for Cooper’s big day.

His teammates, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, A.C. Green and former head coach Pat Riley, were all standing right behind him, supporting Cooper the way he had done for them for years on the court.

Cooper was known as a selfless player as a Laker and even during his big night, he was as gracious as a person can be. He thanked everyone involved in his career from Lakers owner Jeanie Buss to former coach Bill Bertka.

The Lakers legend wrapped up his speech by thanking the Lakers fanbase for their endless support throughout his playing and coaching days. He reminded them that if they ever miss seeing No. 21 on the Lakers floor, they need only look up in the rafters.

Before the unveiling of his jersey hanging in the rafters of Crypto.com Arena Cooper spoke to the media pregame. He said this was an even bigger accomplishment than being inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame.

He went on to share why this honor was his biggest personal achievement and what makes the Lakers such a unique organization to be a part of, given the mom-and-pop family atmosphere Dr. Buss established during the 80s.

Cooper is a great person and as humble as an NBA player can be, but he’s getting this honor because of his play.

He was known as one of the best defensive players in NBA history. Cooper was a five-time All-Defensive first team, three times he was on the All-Defensive second team and he won Defensive Player of the Year in the 1986-87 season as a reserve.

Overall, this was a memorable night and Cooper is proof that defense can be the dirty work and the glory all wrapped in one.
