The Charge snap a four-game losing streak to bring their regular season record to 4-4.

The Cleveland Charge snapped a four-game losing streak as they defeated the Grand Rapid Gold 113-103 to split their two-game weekend set. A 23-point outing from Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Jaylon Tyson made that possible.

The Charge struggled to contain the Gold on the defensive end on Friday. Grand Rapids was able to consistently generate clean three-point looks as they went 20-44 (45.5%) from beyond the arc to fuel a 124-105 victory.

“Fifteen of their 23 threes were in the first half yesterday, we just allowed them to get comfortable,” said Charge head coach Chris Darnell. “When you do that, it turns into a long night because everybody is in rhythm.”

That defensive intensity that was lacking on Friday was there on Saturday as the Gold went 12-34 (35.3%) from three on Saturday.

“Our ball pressure at the point of attack, the communication on that side of the floor, you could just tell that the guys felt the loss from yesterday,” Darnell said.

Clevland had a balanced attack on the other end of the court. Six Charge players finished with double-digit points and six players contributed three or more assists. This was made possible by Criagh Porter Jr. and Jacob Gilyard’s ability to continually keep the ball moving as the team’s lead playmakers.

“Both of those guys are great decision-makers,” Darnell said. “They have the ability to put a lot of pressure on the defense and they’re both really smart players too. ... I think they just manipulate the action and create an advantage.”

The balanced offense and better defensive effort allowed Cleveland to keep Grand Rapids at bay nearly all game as they cruised to a relatively stress-free win.

Tyson led the way after struggling the previous night. He did most of his damage off the ball as a cutter and a spot-up shooter. Tyson went 5-5 from beyond the arc. This was on top of his typical proficiency as a rebounder. He finished with 23 points on 8-14 shooting with 16 boards, 5 offensive rebounds, and an assist.

“I was just playing my game,” said Jaylon Tyson. “It was a rough one yesterday. I haven’t in like a month I would say. So just staying into it and having a bounce-back. That was my whole mindset just coming in. Just play hard and winning the game.”

Porter, who was also on assignment from the Cavs, wasn’t too far behind Tyson’s point total. He finished with 21 points and 4 assists. His ability to get into the lane opened up the scoring for himself and others. Porter also provided the highlight of the night with a nice alley-oop dunk in transition.

“He’s a hell of a player,” Tyson said about Porter. “He’s one of the most talented dudes that I played with. I expected this.”

It was a well-balanced stat sheet for the Charge. Elijah Hughes provided a much-needed spark off the bench with his outside shooting as he went 4-10 from distance for 17 points. Nae’Qwan Tomlin added 14 points and 10 rebounds on 5-12 shooting. JT Thor only had 8 points, but contributed a team-high 6 assists.

Pete Nance made his return to the Charge after being released from his two-way contract by the Philadelphia 76ers. He contributed 12 points and 7 rebounds in a reserve role. Darnell credited some of the team’s defensive turnaround to having Nance back.

“The biggest thing with him is his defensive impact,” Darnell said. “He’s one of our best communicators. He presents size. He helps us rebound the ball. ... He just provides another anchor on that side of the floor.”

This was a much-needed win for a Charge team that was without Luke Travers (ankle) and Emoni Bates (knee) that hasn’t been able to establish any consistent momentum this year. The victory brings them to 4-4 in the regular season and 11-13 overall.

The Charge will be back in action on Tuesday when they host the College Park Skyhawks.
