There are worse stories from this disaster but this one hits home for Duke fans

As the astonishing and horrifying scenes continue to unfold in the Los Angeles fires, one victim will hit close to home for many readers: JJ Redick and his family lost their home to the fire.

Redick and wife Chelsea and their kids moved to L.A. when the Lakers hired him as head coach over the summer.

Redick says that his wife was uncertain about leaving Brooklyn because they had a wonderful community where they lived but they were apparently thrilled with their new neighborhood.

Now it’s all gone.

Redick does a great job of keeping his emotions to himself but occasionally he shows them. We learned after he left Duke that he almost quit at one point because he was so frustrated with how his family was treated by opposing fans.

The Redicks were renting but home is home and they had all the things you accumulate over time that simply can’t be replaced.

He said that he wants the Lakers to play to give their fellow Angelenos some hope and that’s a good attitude. People are going to have to look out for each other in this insane and unprecedented situation.

At some point though the Redicks, like everyone else, will need some time to process what has happened. The whole situation is just surreal.

As mentioned previously, we hope you will consider contacting your charity of choice and helping as generously as possible.
