Dub Hub: Steph Curry explains how the Dennis Schroder trade will help the Warriors
Rounding up all Warriors and NBA related news for Monday, December 16th.
In today’s Dub Hub:
- Steph Curry explains how the Warriors’ trade for Dennis Schroder will help the team this season.
- Warriors lose to Mavericks, 143-133, in a game which featured a record-breaking 48 made three-pointers.
- Bucks and Thunder advance to the Championship Round of the NBA Cup.
The Golden State Warriors suffered their 11th loss of the season on Sunday night, falling to the Dallas Mavericks 143-133. However, the team did score a significant win over the weekend by acquiring former Brooklyn Nets guard Dennis Schroder in a pivotal trade.
In the deal, the Warriors sent De’Anthony Melton, Reece Beekman, and three second-round picks to Brooklyn in exchange for Schroder and a 2025 second-round pick.
Speaking after the game, Warriors star Stephen Curry shared his optimism about the move, explaining how Schroder’s arrival could help impact the team this season.
“It can help me. It can help us. What helps me, helps us.”

The trade addresses a critical need for Golden State amidst their recent slump. Averaging 18.4 points, 6.6 assists, and 1.1 steals per game this season, Schroder’s skill set aligns closely with the role Melton played prior to his season-ending knee injury; offering solid defense, ball-handling, and a secondary scoring punch to the backcourt.
With Schroder now in the fold, the Warriors aim to regain momentum as they navigate through this rough stretch of games in the competitive Western Conference.

The Warriors are also receiving a 2025 second-round pick (via Miami) from the Nets, while Brooklyn gets Reece Beekman and three second-round picks (2026 and 2028 via Atlanta, 2029 via Golden State) in the deal.
Schroder has been one of the best guards in the NBA this year, pushing the Nets into play-in contention in the Eastern Conference early in the season.
“I’m thrilled,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said before Sunday’s game against the Mavericks. “I told Dennis today he’s kicked my [butt] on three different continents. You can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em — ‘22 playoffs I thought he was brilliant against us with the Lakers. Watching him in FIBA the last two summers, Philippines and we played them in London in an exhibition game. He’s a gamer, he’s a competitor, pick-and-roll player, two-way player.”
The Warriors’ revolving door at off-guard is about to get a Dennis Schröder boost | The Athletic
On Monday, the Warriors’ newest guard arrives. Dennis Schröder will take his physical on Monday, practice Tuesday and debut for the Warriors on Thursday night in Memphis. Kerr wouldn’t officially name Schröder the immediate starting shooting guard, but it’s clear that the most influential decision-makers believe that is where it’ll land quickly.
“He would seem to be a perfect fit to start next to Steph (Curry),” Kerr said.
Melton’s injury paved the way for Schröder’s arrival. His absence created an opening, and their contracts matched nearly perfectly for a trade. But Podziemski’s offensive struggles generated the extra level of urgency to get it done on the first day Melton and Schröder became trade eligible.

What we learned as Warriors come up short in shootout with Mavs | NBC Sports Bay Area
For the second time this season, Steve Kerr began the game with Green on the bench. Whenever Green isn’t on the court, the Warriors’ defense is sure to take a hit. The Mavs sure took advantage, too.
They made their first nine shots of the game. As startling as that sounds, it’s not a typo. By the time Green entered the game with seven and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Warriors already were down by 12 points, 23-11.
Behind Dončić’s elite play, the Mavs kept rolling, but Green was great to begin the game. In the first quarter, he had nine points while making three of his four 3-point attempts. His fourth three of the night, this time in the second quarter, set a new Warriors franchise record – also tying a NBA record – and Green let the whole building hear about it.
Klay Thompson describes how it felt to get a win in the Chase Center as a member of the Mavericks
"As far as regular season games, it's gotta be up there. Bucks-Hawks: 5 takeaways from Emirates NBA Cup Semifinals | NBA
They started 2-8. They’ve won 12 of 15 since. All the noise, the circling vultures, the projections of doom and the possibility of this being a lost season have suddenly vaporized.
“Outside of Milwaukee,” said coach Doc Rivers, “people were wondering what’s going on. Not us.”
Maybe, just maybe, the Bucks fit the description of being an East contender again. This much is factual — they will contend for a championship trophy in 2024-25.
As for the one awarded in June? Rivers says that’s the obvious goal but isn’t thinking beyond the most immediate championship, the one awarded on Tuesday (8:30 ET, ABC). He implored his team to prioritize it — not that he needed much prodding, given how the Bucks have been reborn after a slow start.
NBA trade deadline 2025: 10 players to watch until Feb. 6 | ESPN
Should New Orleans explore the trade market for Williamson and build around Ingram? The question is valid, especially if the Pelicans are tired of regularly seeing Williamson’s name on the injury report. The realization comes with New Orleans needing Williamson to be available if it wants to maximize his value on the court or in a trade.
If they do move him, the Pelicans can acquire expiring contracts and perhaps a future first-round pick. New Orleans can outright release Williamson this summer with no financial obligation.
In case you missed it at Golden State of Mind:
Warriors acquiring Nets guard for Melton, second-round picks
This trade doesn’t preclude future moves, though the expiring Melton deal was a very useful trade piece. Some people, including this author, would love to see the Warriors try to pick up recently-released center Paul Reed, a mobile big man who can shoot who could be available for the league minimum (and likely jettisoning Gui Santos).
It’s not a thrilling dude, but it absolutely plugs a hole for the Warriors. It’s beneficial that the move comes in mid-December, meaning they’ll have Schroder for more than 70% of the season. Mike Dunleavy, Jr. deserves credit for pulling the trigger early. Plus, we’re pretty sure that Schroder’s hair dye doesn’t count against the cap. We’ll have to confirm that with Nate Duncan.
