The Cavs are looking to get healthy as the schedule eases up.

The Cleveland Cavaliers held their first practice in about a month on Saturday morning. After practice, head coach Kenny Atkinson provided updates on their recently injured players.

Here is a rundown of who did and didn’t practice

  • Sam Merrill (ankle) - full practice
  • Isaac Okoro (ankle) - full practice
  • Dean Wade (ankle) - didn’t practice
  • Caris LeVert (knee) - didn’t practice
  • Max Strus (ankle) - didn’t practice

Atkinson didn’t give an update on Darius Garland (groin), but he was in a wine practice jersey signifying that he likely was a full participant.

Wade didn’t practice but was doing on-court work with the coaching staff afterward. Atkinson said that he’s “progressing nicely.”

LeVert is “still trying to get back” according to Atkinson. The injury he’s dealing with is in the same knee as the one that kept him out at the end of last season and that didn’t fully recover until a few weeks before training camp. He was not seen doing on-court work when media was allowed in at the end of practice.

Strus was briefly seen doing on-court work. Atkinson says that he is “making progress but still a ways away.”

The initial timeline for Strus’s injury put him on a six-week timetable for reevaluation. According to the initial diagnosis, that window would be coming up next week.

The Cavs just finished up a stretch of playing 17 games in 29 days which likely led to an increase in injuries. Atkinson enjoyed having a few days off for a change as the team had consecutive days without a game for the first time this season.

“It was great,” Atkinson said about the break. “I think we all needed it. All of us. [We got to] sleep in a little bit, spend time with the family, so it was great.”
