Economic impact of new professional basketball team in Schenectady
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A new professional basketball team is coming to the Capital Region in 2025. The New York Phoenix will play home games at the Armory Studios in Schenectady.
The team will compete in The Basketball League, the same league as the Albany Patroons. The addition of a new basketball team comes as crews are building a new arena at Mohawk Harbor.
The $50 million facility will host the Union College men's and women's hockey programs. Leaders said the tourism industry already brings in hundreds of millions of dollars and creates thousands of jobs. They expect those numbers to go up.
"Tournaments here, getting them involved in youth sports and so on, so we're going to be able to attract a lot more to this facility as well as the facilities around Schenectady," Discovering Schenectady Exec. Dir. Todd Garofano said. "Sports is really on the rise for us."
