Not a great night for the Tigers

In Sunday’s ACC Action, Miami thumped Coppin State 93-63, Stanford popped UC Davis 79-65, Cal got by USC 71-66 and Clemson fell to Boise State 84-71.

Let’s start there.

Clemson was in this game in the first half but the second belonged to the Broncos.

The difference?

Boise State hit 27 free throws to 15 for Clemson. Chauncey Wiggins fouled out and Ian Schieffelin picked up four. They combined to hit just 5-15 from the floor. Chase Hunter got a career high 30 points.

Former Blue Devil Christian Reeves played four minutes and the only thing on his stat line was one foul.

Jaylen Blakes had better luck with Stanford against UC Davis, with 17 points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals before fouling out.

Stanford really had little trouble with the Aggies. Frenchman Maxime Raynaud racked up 33 points and 14 rebounds, which was his fourth straight double-double.

Both of those guys are playing well but keep your pants on: the four opponents have been Denver, Fullerton, Northern Arizona and now UC Davis. It’s not exactly Murderer’s Row.

There’s not too much to say about Miami’s win over 0-6 Coppin State. The Eagles are on their annual road trip/fundraising tour and they’ve lost to the likes of Rider and UMBC.

Six guys got into double figures, but it’s all deceptive because Coppin State doesn’t really offer any meaningful data. Miami might be getting better. Maybe they treated this a useful scrimmage. Who knows? It’s not worth getting excited about to say the least.

Finally, Cal beat USC 71-66 on the road. Andrej Stojakovic, who averaged 7.8 ppg for Stanford last season, is getting 16.8 so far with Cal.

Again, keep it in perspective: Cal has played Bakersfield, Cal Poly, Vanderbilt and now USC. The Trojans may or may not be a decent team this year but they hired Eric Musselman in the off-season. We’ll see what he can do against a better team, but don’t hold your breath: the next three opponents are Air Force, Sacramento State and Mercyhurst.
