Austin Reaves thinks struggles on road trip could be ‘good thing’ for Lakers
Only one win during their recent road trip may be a blessing in disguise for the Lakers, at least if you buy what Austin Reaves is selling.
At home, the Lakers look like a promising team that is finding ways to win. They have remained undefeated in six games at Crypto.com Arena.
On the road, they've been blown out by the Cavs, lost handily to the Grizzlies and suffered an embarrassing defeat against the Pistons.
With a 1-4 road record, the Lakers are heading to San Antonio to face the Spurs and begin their quest to win a second NBA Cup.
It'll be a brief trip, with back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday. It'd be ideal if Los Angeles could pull out a pair of wins and quiet down the noise that they are a far worse team away from home.
Amid the Lakers’ recent homestand, Austin Reaves discussed the team's road woes after Sunday's win against the Raptors and put a positive spin on the current situation.
"You wish it was smooth sailing the whole time," Reaves said. "Obviously, you're going to go through ups and downs. I think not playing well on that road trip might have been a good thing for us to completely buy into what we do need to do to be successful. I feel like these coaches are putting us in positions to be successful and when we buy in and do it, good things happen. Even if it's a game plan adjustment, they'll come in and say, 'We messed up. We need to do this instead.
“Everybody's kind of just holding each other accountable. So it's it's a beautiful thing to see."
You have to love Reaves' positive take on this one. The NBA season is long and it won't always be smooth sailing. If tribulations are going to happen, it's better to get them out of the way early, address what needs to be fixed and improve so the team can be its best come playoff time.
Luckily, L.A.'s upcoming games won't be against top talent. The Spurs are at .500 entering Friday's contest, and the Pelicans, whom they play on Saturday, are at 3-6.
So, they should be able to perform better during this road trip and potentially win both games, returning to Los Angeles on a five-game winning streak.
