Jonathan Kuminga hasn’t gotten a big extension offer from the Warriors, per Danny Emerman.

It sure seems like the Golden State Warriors will not be agreeing to a contract extension with young wing Jonathan Kuminga prior to the start of the regular season. While all signs have been pointing in that direction for some time, a new report from Danny Emerman of The Bay Area News Group, has added more specific details to the current state of negotiations.

Emerman cites multiple sources that remain skeptical of the two sides reaching an agreement. Perhaps most notably, Emerman reports that the Dubs have not put a significant offer on the table.

“Still, there isn’t a substantial offer on the table for Kuminga at this point, sources told this news organization,” Emerman wrote.

Kuminga is entering the final year on his rookie contract and is slated to enter restricted free agency following the season. The 22-year old wing is eligible for an extension worth more than $220 million over five years. However, despite Kuminga’s upward trajectory and productive flashes, the Warriors remain hesitant to make that commitment. Given head coach Steve Kerr’s inconsistent usage of Kuminga throughout his career, it’s far from a surprise.

Interestingly, Emerman’s reporting also claims that Kuminga and his camp may be open to an extension that falls short of a max offer. “Kuminga’s camp isn’t hard-lined at that maximum figure, a source said, but it’s hard to imagine him settling for significantly less,” Emerman wrote.

Kuminga has seen his role and productivity steadily increase throughout the first three seasons of his career. Last year, he averaged 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 26.3 minutes per game. Following the departure of Klay Thompson, there’s a clear path for Kuminga to establish himself as the Warriors’ second-best scorer. However, that would likely require Kerr lessening his reliance on veteran small forward Andrew Wiggins.
