Grannys flood capital city for basketball tournament

0 7

TOPEKA (KSNT) - While fall is typically known as football season, some basketball players are preparing for a big tournament of their own in the capital city.

Granny Basketball is a part of the 6th Kansas Senior Games hosted in Topeka. Nine teams from Kansas, Texas, Iowa and Oklahoma are competing for gold at this weekend's tournament. The league is for women ages 50 and older who follow "old-school" rules.

The rules include a six-on-six style of game, with 1920's style uniforms including bloomers, knee high stockings and blouses.

"The way that women used to play 100 years ago," Granny Basketball League Executive Director Michelle Clark said. "And, it's in respect for those women who came before us."

"It doesn't matter if you've never played basketball before or if you play college ball," Waco Six Shooter Celia Cansell said, "there's a place for you to play great basketball."

The tournament started Friday, Sept. 13 and will continue until Saturday, Sept. 14 at Sportzone located at 3909 SW Burlingame Topeka, KS 66609.
