Breaking down the Top 5 quarterbacks in the 2025 recruiting class

The 2025 class has a number of talented options at quarterback. How do they all compare?

The 2025 recruiting class has began to wrap up at quarterback, with the top 50 players at the position all committed to a program following official visits, according to On3 sports.

With the fall football season coming up sooner than later, let’s break down the top five quarterbacks in the 2025 class, evaluating each prospect ahead of their senior seasons.

Bryce Underwood | Belleville (Mich.)

The No. 1 quarterback in the 2025 class, Underwood’s recruitment was shut down in January when the five-star committed to the LSU Tigers.

Underwood had set a list of his top seven schools back in November, with LSU, Alabama, Michigan, Colorado, Penn State, Florida State, and Oregon making the final cut.

Ultimately, the Michigan native chose the Tigers following several unofficial visits to the program, providing Baton Rouge with one of the best quarterback recruits in recent memory, according to the rankings.

Standing at 6’3’’, 205 pounds, Underwood is the complete package; he has the size, arm talent, athleticism, and instincts needed to be a top recruit at the quarterback position, which was seen during his 2023 season, where he threw for 3,329 yards, 44 touchdowns, and just three interceptions, while rushing for seven touchdowns.

Underwood has another advantage, as he’s one of the youngest players in the class, which may require him to take a year to get up to speed at the next level. Still, he projects as a quality multi-year starter at LSU with a high ceiling who could become a first-round talent if everything clicks with his set of tools.

The Michigan native is good in tight windows, as well as with his touch on intermediate and deeper passes, and has continued to improve his mechanics, allowing him to throw the ball effectively to all areas of the field.

More importantly, it seems as if his feel for the game is already there, as Underwood has a good feel for pressure in the pocket and shows a good understanding of defenses when reading the field, adding to his on-field abilities.

Ultimately, Underwood’s tools are among the best in the entire class, as his combination of size, athleticism, and arm talent make him an elite dual-threat quarterback prospect.

Tavien St. Clair | Bellefontaine (Ohio)

One of the bigger quarterback recruits in the 2025, five-star Tavien St. Clair committed to Ohio State during his official visit in June, choosing the Buckeyes over an offer list that consisted of Michigan, Alabama, Penn State, and Tennessee, among others.

St. Clair stands at 6’4”, 225 pounds, but also has good mobility and speed to be one of the better dual-threat options in the class.

A quarterback that has taken significant strides in each of the last few seasons, St. Clair clearly has the arm strength and has improved his accuracy, completing 70 percent of his passes as a junior, while throwing for 3,938 yards, 37 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

St. Clair’s deep ball is one of his major calling cards, as he may have the best in the class heading into the fall, and he showcased good mechanics at the Elite 11 earlier this offseason.

An Ohio native, St. Clair is staying home at Ohio State, and joins an extremely talented quarterback room that will have Air Noland, Julian Sayin, Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz as their projected group next year.

There likely will be some movement, but it, nonetheless, marks for one of the more talented groups of young talent in the nation.

Julian “Ju Ju” Lewis | Carrollton (Ga.)

One of the hotter names on the recruiting trail this offseason, Julian Lewis remains as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2025 class heading into the fall.

A USC commit, Lewis has taken a number of official and unofficial visits over the past year, most recently heading to Colorado, Auburn, and Indiana this June, as well as Southern California.

One of the younger quarterbacks in the class after re-classifying from the 2026 class, Lewis has some of the best accuracy and ball placement, while his production at Carrollton High School has been nothing short of elite.

Throwing for 7,512 yards and 96 touchdowns over the last two years, Lewis’ game has continued to grow, with his intangibles standing out in addition to his accuracy and touch.

In the pocket, Lewis has a good feel, allowing him to make plays on the run, while also finding ways to escape and not put the ball in harms way.

Size and arm strength may be the main detractors for the 6’1’’, 185-pound quarterback, but the overall arm talent is ultimately there.

Not to mention, he’ll be headed to work with Lincoln Riley, should the head coach stay at USC, who has significant experience working with similar players to Lewis, which can only boost his overall stock.

Husan Longstreet | Corona (Calif.) Centennial

The top quarterback in the state of California, five-star Husan Longstreet is headed to Texas A&M for his next destination, choosing the Aggies, despite them not initially making his top eight list of schools back in November.

Still, Longstreet’s relationship with new head coach Mike Elko and his staff grew, leading to a Junior Day visit back in February and a commitment in April before his official visit this summer.

As a junior, Longstreet threw for 3,013 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions, while completing 66.8 percent of his passes. He also showcased his dual-threat ability, rushing for 645 yards and seven scores on the ground.

Standing 6’2, 200 pounds, Longstreet’s arm strength stands out, which allows him to throw to all areas of the field, while showing comfortability throwing on the run as well.

With that strength, Longstreet will need to work on his touch at the next level, but the velocity can’t be taught, while he shows a good feel for utilizing his dual-threat skills when necessary.

He should be a strong fit in a zone-read system and could be used very similarly to how Riley Leonard was used at Duke under Elko when he finally hits the field at Texas A&M.

Keelon Russell | Duncanville (Texas)

One of the biggest risers this offseason, five-star Keelon Russell is one of the best athletes in the 2024 class, and will be headed to Alabama.

A native of Duncanville, Texas, Russell was initially committed to his hometown SMU Mustangs, but de-committed from the program and chose to go to Alabama following an official visit in June.

Russell plays for one of the best teams in Texas, but has proven to be the real deal with a knack for playmaking with both his arm and his legs at the quarterback position.

Russell plays with a good timing, making him a solid anticipatory thrower at this stage, but will need to continue improve as a decision-maker as he gets off initial reads.

He’ll be working with a strong staff under head coach Kalen DeBoer at Alabama, and his 6’3’’, 175-pound frame leaves a ton of room for growth, making him one of the more intriguing quarterbacks in the entire cycle when it comes to potential.

His rushing capabilities especially stand out, even at his size, making him an exciting player to watch. His development is clearly starting to unfold, as he was MVP at the Elite 11 this offseason, showcasing his arm talent.

If he can put it all together with another strong season of production this season, he could even continue to rise in the rankings as a potential consensus top-three quarterback in the class heading into college.
