France head coach says Rudy Gobert benching had nothing to do with finger injury

0 4
Mike Finger: Collet did say Rudy Gobert hurt his finger at practice and had an MRI. But Collet made it clear the lineup change had nothing to do with injury. Could have lied and given his veteran star cover, but chose to be honest instead. Gotta respect it.

To be clear, France coach Vincent Collet said Rudy Gobert was cleared to play. But Collet wanted to go small, and he liked the lineups that were working even after the starters. He saw a chance to let Rudy heal, yes, but this was largely strategic.

So, Gobert either had surgery or didn’t have surgery. Got it! In any case, worked out pretty well for France today, I’d say. pic.twitter.com/ay7B76Au2B2:58 PM

French big man Rudy Gobert, who played less than four minutes tonight, just told a few of us reporters that he had surgery on his left ring finger yesterday and was thankful he was able to play at all in this win over Canada. @JeffZillgitt @davidaldridgedc – 2:37 PM

France center Rudy Gobert said he injured his left ring finger in practice two days ago and had surgery on it yesterday which limited his minutes against Canada. France advanced to semis with victory vs. Canada. – 2:37 PM

France’s Rudy Gobert, who was benched and played limited minutes in quarterfinal win over Canada, said he suffered an unspecified finger injury during practice before the knockout round.

The fact that it was Yabusele/Cordinier/Fournier that were the story and not Wemby/Gobert/Batum was something I didn’t see coming. Nor did I see Brooks scoring only 2 points, or Murray struggling (again (unfortunately)).
This stings.
But I still believe the future is bright. – 2:17 PM

France came into the QF with 5 NBA players:
Wemby: 7 points
Gobert: 4 minutes
Fournier: came off bench
Batum: scoreless
Coulibaly: 1 minutes
Yabusele/Cordinier/Lassort: 55 points

France upsets Canada 82-73 in phenomenal quarterfinal win for the hosts.
– Benching Rudy Gobert clears way for Yabusele & Lessort, who punish Canada inside.
-Cordinier w/ night for the ages.
– Wembanyama, often adrift, has big block late.
– Will get rematch vs. Germany in semis. – 2:04 PM

Wemby and Gobert have combined for 2 points and haven’t hit a shot (0-for-3). Yet, France leads Canada 45-29 at the half. OK then. – 12:55 PM
Eric Smith @Eric__Smith
Canada got outworked too often for loose balls & rebounds — with Wemby & Gobert off the floor…
Then when Wemby came back with about 2:40 left in the half, it was almost entirely 3 ball after 3 ball for the Canadians.
And the FT disparity (*not on the refs) is a major issue. – 12:54 PM

In the first half, Victor Wembanyama, Rudy Gobert, Evan Fournier and Nic Batum combined for five (5) points.

We’ve yet to see Gobert for France. He didn’t start, which could be a matchup thing vs the smaller/quicker Canadians, but strange that he’s not out there now that Wemby has gone to the bench. – 12:16 PM

Between them, Gobert and Wemby have blocked 14 shots at the Olympics (they rank 1st and 2nd, respectively, in that category). That’s more than 10 of the 12 teams in the tournament, and twice as many blocks as Canada has recorded through 3 games. – 11:10 AM

More on this storyline

Mike Finger: Kind of an amazing postgame mixed-zone story here: Rudy Gobert and Evan Fournier said Gobert had finger surgery yesterday, and that’s why he didn’t start. But French coach Vincent Collet said it was not a surgery, and Gobert was benched to start Wemby at the 5. -via Twitter @mikefinger / August 6, 2024
France has done it. They are again at the Olympic semifinals, this time in front of their fans in Paris. Vincent Collet’s side defeated Canada and will face Germany for the final. Les Bleus achieved this with Rudy Gobert playing only three minutes. The Minnesota Timberwolves center explained what happened and why he got limited minutes. “Some of it was about matchups, things that happened in practice, injuries, things like that, but regardless, that was a really good decision,” Gobert said. He emphasized that the team comes first. “The communication was key. A lot of things happened. I have full trust in my teammates and coaches, and it worked. We see the way we started again tonight. Guys were already ready to play and they set the tone for the game.” -via EuroHoops.net / August 6, 2024
