Tim McMahon on Lauri Markkanen's potential extension: 'If he signs after August 6 he's going to give himself a one-year, no-trade exception'

Tim McMahon on Lauri Markkanen: The Jazz I don’t believe are shopping him but if you give them an offer they can’t refuse they would take it. There’s been nothing close to an offer they can’t refuse. Now, then we’ve got this situation where like I said he is eligible to sign a contract extension that they can use that cap space on. He’s eligible to sign that August 6. If he signs it August 6, exactly six months from that date is the trade deadline. So he can be traded this year if he signs in August 6. If he signs it August 7th or any day after that he cannot be traded this year. (…) I will walk from Park City to Salt Lake City to cover a game next year if Lauri Markkanen signs the extension on August 6. If he signs that extension after August 6, he’s going to give himself what essentially is a one-year no-trade exception.

More on this storyline

Evan Sidery: The Jazz have $30.2 million in available cap space, and they’re required to hit a salary floor within the CBA. Utah must add another $14+ million in salary before the season begins. Agreeing to a new deal with Lauri Markkanen via renegotiate-and-extend would accomplish this. pic.twitter.com/EDjeASTxjs -via Twitter @esidery / July 27, 2024
Bobby Marks: Utah announced that they have waived Kenneth Lofton Jr. and Darius Bazley. Both players contracts were set to be guaranteed $400K if they were on the roster past July 25. Utah has $37.7M in salary cap space. To reach the minimum salary floor, Utah has to spend $23.7M by the first day of the regular season. The window to renegotiate the $18M Lauri Markkanen contract begins on August 6. -via Twitter @BobbyMarks42 / July 24, 2024
