Warriors finalize agreement for Buddy Hield sign-and-trade with 76ers

The Dubs are ultimately parting with one second round pick to get the deal done.

The Golden State Warriors have finalized the deal to acquire shooting guard Buddy Hield in a sign-and-trade with the Philadelphia 76ers. The Dubs will be sending the Mavericks’ 2031 second-round pick to the Sixers in the deal, per The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Hield agreed to a deal that could be worth up to $36 million over four years, but only guarantees him $21 million, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Hield is guaranteed $18 million over the first two years of his contract and has a $3 million partial guarantee in the third year. The fourth year of the deal is fully non-guaranteed, but does have a player option.

The Warriors were only able to acquire Hield through the traded player exception that was created by Klay Thompson agreeing to a three-year, $50 million sign-and-trade with the Mavericks. The Dubs had already used a portion of that exception to add Kyle Anderson, and now they add another dynamic shooter.

Hield is one of the best three-point marksmen in the league, having shot 38.6% from distance last year, 42.5% the year before, and 40.0% for his career. He’s not the highest-volume scorer — he averaged just 12.1 points per game last year — but he’s only two years removed from averaging 18.2 points. He moves very well off the ball, so he’s likely to be a good fit in the Warriors system offensively.

Defensively, Hield is a liability, but the Warriors acquisition of a defensive-focused guard in De’Anthony Melton seems like the perfect potential compliment for matchups when Hield is at risk of being exposed on that end of the floor.
