If the Lakers want to open up the full $12.9M NTMLE to sign someone like Klay, Harden or Valanciunas, they’d only have $33.5M left for LeBron – about $16M below his max.
In that scenario, they’d likely try to trade away some salary to open up more money for LeBron. – 4:13 PM

LeBron James is willing to take a $20 million pay cut in order for the Lakers to secure the full mid-level exception, per @wojespn:
– There’s a sense LeBron will take it year-to-year now on new contracts instead of a multi-year deal.
– Klay Thompson and Jonas Valanciunas appear pic.twitter.com/y2f2BULiHP10:46 AM

LeBron James can help open up the Lakers’ full mid-level exception to pursue Klay Thompson and other players by signing for $33 million in 2024-25.
James would be taking a $16 million pay cut, but he can opt out next offseason to recoup more money. pic.twitter.com/Qpt9H3T3JV10:45 PM

With LeBron interested in taking a pay cut for the right free agent and the Lakers armed with multiple mid-sized salaries and two valuable first-round picks to trade, there is no excuse for LA to not dramatically improve its roster over the next few days: nytimes.com/athletic/56037…8:59 PM

More on this storyline

Adrian Wojnarowski: There’s a sense probably LeBron James starts to really take this year to year, but what he’s telling the Lakers is if they can find an impact player at the mid-level exception about $13 million whether that’s a Klay Thompson, a James Harden, a Jonas Valanciunas, maybe a couple others because this is not a star-laden free agency class, he will take less on his contract to allow the Lakers to add that exception into their payroll. -via YouTube / June 30, 2024
There has been very little reported on the type of offers James Harden will receive in his free agency, but a potential offer of the full non-taxpayer midlevel from the Los Angeles Lakers starting at $12.8 million will likely be far less than what the Los Angeles Clippers will offer. The Lakers could afford to offer the full MLE to Harden due to the willingness of LeBron James to take nearly $20 million less on his contract. “James Harden could get double that to return to the Clippers,” said Adrian Wojnarowski of the Lakers’ pursuit. -via RealGM / June 30, 2024
The most likely pay cut scenario would be James signing a two-year deal with a player option for 2025-26, allowing him to opt out in 2025 and re-sign for more money, according to league sources. The Lakers also could perform a smaller salary-dump trade (or two) to create more financial wiggle room and allow James to take a smaller decrease. -via New York Times / June 30, 2024
