Sad news but the man clearly knows how to fight

You have to feel for Dick Vitale. The man has had three bouts of cancer and beaten them all, only to face round #4: he’s been diagnosed with cancer of the lymph node and is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday.

So far, he’s had melanoma, lymphoma and vocal cord cancer.

What we most admire is his attitude. Vitale is now 85 and he just keeps fighting. It’d be easy to let up, not least of all at 85, but the man never does.

The irony of Vitale fighting cancer, again, is that the man has worked so hard for the V Foundation.

Named for Jim Valvano, the former NC State coach who gave such a memorable speech at the ESPYs in 1993, telling the audience to never give up, the V Foundation has done tremendous work and Vitale has been a key part of it all. Former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski has also been hugely supportive.

Life is often cruel and makes no sense and that’s the case with Vitale fighting cancer yet again. But who can bet against him? The man never gives up. We expect he’ll win again and look forward to seeing him ring the bell when he does.
