Celtics pick up Sam Hauser's team option ahead of contract extension talks

0 4
The Celtics are planning to pick up forward Sam Hauser’s $2.1 million option for the 2024-25 season prior to Saturday’s 5 p.m. deadline, according to multiple league sources. A source said that the two sides are expected to begin negotiating an extension for the 26-year-old forward after the window for those discussions opens July 9.

Brad Stevens again emphasizes he wants to keep all of their extension eligible players in Boston for a long time. That’s Hauser, White, and Tatum. – 7:04 PM

The Celtics drafted sharpshooter Baylor Scheierman out of Duke with the 30th pick. But he’s more than just a shooter. The guys they draft always are more than just one thing.
So what does this mean for his future in Boston, as well as Sam Hauser?

Wrote this on Scheierman this morning. You have to start to develop floor spacers behind Hauser and this is a great prospect to fit into that mold. Likely going to spend time in Maine with Walsh & co., but the passing & rebounding, and RANGE of his shot is appealing. pic.twitter.com/hYVkrfUuIK11:35 PM

Sam Hauser, Oshae Brissett, Svi Mykhailiuk all free agents in Boston
Baylor Scheierman knows how to move the ball, shoots 3s, and rebounds at a high level. Would not surprise me if he found his way into second unit for Celtics. – 11:17 PM

Interesting path to keeping Hauser long-term if the #Celtics want to try it. He has a $2.1M team option due for 6/29, which seemed like a slam dunk to pick up. I didn’t realize he becomes a RESTRICTED FA if BOS declines that. Would inevitably make more this year, but do you save – 3:22 PM

Expect that trend to continue. In addition to Tatum, I’m hearing it’s very likely that Sam Hauser and Derrick White will join them. Hauser has one year left for the minimum, on a team option, and will be extension-eligible this summer; he’s about to get more expensive, but Boston sees him as a keeper. One possible cap shenanigan would be to decline Hauser’s team option for 2024-25 and re-sign him for lower money and more years than in an extension that started in 2025-26. Doing so would increase the Celtics’ tax penalty in 2024-25 but lessen the impact of the repeater penalty and manage the second apron in the out years. -via New York Times / June 20, 2024
Six Celtics are on extensions signed with Boston after they arrived; deals for Brown, Jrue Holiday and Payton Pritchard have each signed through 2028. Expect that trend to continue.
