Mavericks interested in Klay Thompson

0 7
League sources tell The Stein Line that the Dallas Mavericks, with some newfound financial flexibility after securing the Tim Hardaway Jr.-to-Detroit trade that I wrote about Tuesday (see the full Twitter thread here), are another team intent on exploring the feasibility of signing Thompson once he makes it to free agency.

If I were the Pistons I’d kind of rather just YOLO a short-term Klay Thompson offer than take on the Hardaway contract.
Like, if you need shooting and to reach the salary floor might as well sell some tickets while you’re rebuilding. – 10:55 AM

Don’t get the Warriors rumors regarding Paul George, especially at a four-year max. He’s 34, three months younger than Klay, and like Klay, not quite the player he was before a serious leg injury. Also further muddies Kuminga/Wiggins situation. – 1:07 PM

More on this storyline

Evan Sidery: Klay Thompson is looking elsewhere as the relationship between he and the Warriors might not be repairable, per @anthonyVslater (podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the…). There is a feeling a split might be best for both parties as Thompson has felt slighted by Golden State in this process. pic.twitter.com/k1No8EJ9s6 -via Twitter @esidery / June 28, 2024
Thompson is said to be seeking a three-year deal at a minimum. The cap space teams are believed to prefer shorter contract structures than Thompson covets but can offset that with higher dollar amounts than teams like the Nuggets and Mavericks can muster. The Nuggets’ need for a two-way wing would be significant and obvious if Caldwell-Pope, as increasingly expected, does not return to the 2022-23 champions. Improving their outside shooting, meanwhile, is one of the Mavericks’ offseason priorities after they made the third trip in franchise history to the NBA Finals. -via marcstein.substack.com / June 28, 2024
While the Warriors examine the feasibility of the George situation and explore the rest of their options around the league, they’ve left the future of a franchise legend off to the side and increased the risk of losing him. There remains no official contract offer and little contact between Thompson and the Warriors, league sources said, as the potential end of his 13-year run with the franchise becomes more plausible. -via New York Times / June 28, 2024
