One of their best playmaking games together of their careers. Now they’re 2 wins away from being champions.

Any focus on what Jayson Tatum isn’t distracts from all that he is and has become — the best playmaker through two games of these NBA Finals, which now have Boston two wins away from Banner 18.

The Jayson Tatum discourse is gonna be even more obnoxious now, but a lot of the slander is probably rooted in some level of jealousy. The Celtics are so well-constructed he doesn’t *have* to play like a top-10 player for his team to be dominant the way other stars do – 10:36 PM
Sean Grande @SeanGrandePBP
The Celtics shot 26% from 3
Jayson Tatum went 6-22
Jaylen Brown had 6 turnovers

Doncic misses the three and the Mavs aren’t fouling. Celtics take a 2-0 Finals lead back to Dallas after Tatum and Brown combine for 19 assists. Jason Kidd tried to drive a wedge, but they’ve seen that move plenty of times and didn’t flinch. – 10:27 PM
Tim Bontemps @TimBontemps
Dallas had a chance to get this thing down to a one-possession game after a terrific Derrick Jones block on a Jayson Tatum drive.
But Derrick White stopped PJ Washington at the rim with a beautiful block, and Jaylen Brown drives and scores at the other end to push it back to 7. – 10:26 PM

Gary Washburn @GwashburnGlobe
Pritchard banks in a 34-footer at the buzzer to give BOS an 83-74 lead after 3Q. Big shot for #Celtics. Holiday 23, Brown 15, Tatum 13 (10 ast), Porzingis 12, White 10; Doncic 29, Irving 12, Washington 11, Jones Jr. 7.
3pt: BOS 6-30; DAL 6-22. – 9:57 PM

Jay King @ByJayKing
Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have not stopped getting into the paint. All game long. All series long. They have not let the Mavericks off the hook at all. – 9:50 PM
Tom Westerholm @Tom_NBA
That last play sums it up perfectly: Tatum is doubled, manages to duck through it, finds Holiday, layup.
It’s not that Tatum is dominating the game. He’s not. He’s letting the game flow around him and moving with the current. – 9:50 PM
Law Murray @LawMurrayTheNU
This is what happens when Luka goes off, Kyrie makes some shots, PJ actually makes a 3, the Celtics can’t, Tatum misses 7 of first 8, you know real Porzingis exists, and you are STILL down at halftime.
Boston seems inevitable. – 9:50 PM
Jared Weiss @JaredWeissNBA
Jrue Holiday is now 9/9 at the rim tonight.
The Celtics offense has been a ton of Tatum drawing a double into the post then hitting a backdoor cutter. Somehow, Dallas is still giving up these open cuts on the backside and Boston is feasting. – 9:50 PM
Gary Washburn @GwashburnGlobe
Tatum records his 10th assist on a nice interior bounce pass to Holiday, who has 23 in 28 minutes. BOS 75, DAL 63 with 2:57 left. Kidd took out Luka on previous possession, but he has to go back in here. #Celtics #Mavericks #NBAFinals9:49 PM
Michael Pina @MichaelVPina
Don’t know what they’re saying on TV but Tatum is having a very good game – 9:49 PM
Souichi Terada @SouichiTerada
Celtics are on a 10-0 run and Jrue Holiday has 23 points on 10-12 shooting. He’s been set up a ton by Jayson Tatum, who’s now up to 10 assists. 75-63 C’s lead and the Garden’s rocking – 9:48 PM
Bobby Manning @RealBobManning
Tatum switched onto Luka then Luka must’ve thought BOS would give a switch again. Tatum trapped with KP and caught Luka’s behind the back pick and pop feed for a steal. – 9:40 PM
Bobby Manning @RealBobManning
Every extra point you give away matters and they’ve given away a few – take foul, the OREB and Tatum’s 3pt play this quarter alone. The lane violation that let Brown hit a 2nd FT in the 2Q comes to mind too. For Boston, they’ve scored under 30 points in five straight quarters – 9:37 PM
Chris Mannix @SIChrisMannix
Bizarre game. Tatum and Brown are 6-19. No one in a Celtics uniform can make a three. Yet Boston has a two-point lead. Ten point edge at the free throw line is huge. – 9:35 PM
Stefan Bondy @SBondyNYDN
The Celtics are so deep neither Tatum nor Brown have 10 points and they’re winning. Meanwhile Doncic has 25. – 9:32 PM
Jared Weiss @JaredWeissNBA
Dallas is trying something new and having Gafford post up Tatum. The Celtics wing is good off-ball as a center but gives up size in the post, so Gafford can get to his hook shot. – 9:30 PM
Mike Curtis @MikeACurtis2
Daniel Gafford with back-to-back tough layups over Tatum. Dallas is making a concerted effort to get production from its bigs. – 9:30 PM
Bobby Manning @RealBobManning
3 fouls on Irving and 3 points for Tatum following a game-changing Holiday OREB. – 9:29 PM
Tom Westerholm @Tom_NBA
“We haven’t seen much from Tatum, he’s been carried by Holiday” is an interesting take when four of Holiday’s baskets were assisted by Tatum. – 9:19 PM
Souichi Terada @SouichiTerada
brutal shooting half from Jayson Tatum (2-10/0-3), but he has as many assists (8) as the Mavs do as a team. maybe he’ll make shots at some point these Finals, but at least he’s playmaking – 9:14 PM
Tim Bontemps @TimBontemps
Halftime: Celtics 54, Mavericks 51
Boston leads despite Jayson Tatum going 2-for-10 from the field (though he has 8 assists) and he & Jaylen Brown being outscored 33-13 by Luka & Kyrie.
Dallas is 5-11 from the FT line and 4-13 from 3. Boston is 13-13 on FTs & 3-15 from 3. – 9:13 PM
Gary Washburn @GwashburnGlobe
Tough offensive first half for Tatum, he’s 2 for 10 FG and just passed up a 3 look to drive and then get stripped to end 2Q. But he also has eight assists. BOS 54, DAL 51.
Holiday 17, Porzingis 10, Brown 8, White 7, Tatum 5, Horford 5. Doncic 23, Irving 10, Jones Jr. 7. – 9:13 PM

Jayson Tatum has five assists, but is 1-for-8 from the field, and 0-for-3 from deep, in 17 minutes so far tonight.

More on this storyline

When he arrived in the interview room after Game 2, Holiday got right down to business. “If I could say something before we jump in, I want to address the comment that was made yesterday,” he began. “I feel like people kind of took that out of context. I’ve been hearing that I prefer JB over JT, and that’s not what that was. I like to praise my teammates. I like to praise my teammates when they’re playing well, and I feel like that’s what I did my best to do.” -via New York Times / June 10, 2024
This game exemplified how Tatum and Brown have taken attention from the defense as a challenge to move the ball rather than dominate it. In the Celtics’ egalitarian offense, that ball always comes back around. “I’m really tired of hearing about one guy or this guy or that guy and everybody trying to make it out to be anything other than Celtic basketball,” head coach Joe Mazzulla said. “Everybody that stepped on that court today made winning plays on both ends of the floor. (That) is the most important thing.” -via New York Times / June 10, 2024
