Dan Hurley to make decision on Lakers coaching job on Monday
The Lakers will have an answer from Dan Hurley as to whether he will be the franchise’s next head coach on Monday.
The Lakers and their fans will not have to wait much longer on Dan Hurley.
After visiting Los Angeles on Friday, Hurley returned to the East Coast. On Sunday, Hurley spoke to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN and revealed he would make his decision on Monday.
UConn coach Dan Hurley told ESPN that the Los Angeles Lakers made a “compelling case” and presented a “compelling vision” for him to become the franchise’s next coach but that he loves what he has built at two-time defending national champion UConn — and plans to make a decision on his future on Monday.
In a phone interview on Sunday, Hurley told ESPN that he left “extremely impressed” with Lakers VP and GM Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss and had been spending Sunday weighing what sources tell ESPN is a massive, long-term offer to move to the NBA.
After all reports indicated the Lakers had their eyes on JJ Redick as the team’s next head coach, Woj dropped the bombshell of the team’s interest in Hurley. According to Woj, Hurley had indeed been the team’s No. 1 option despite the reported interest in both Redick and James Borrego.
The Lakers' “compelling case” to Hurley reportedly included an enormous payday. According to John Fanta of Fox Sports, the Lakers are offering Hurley a deal worth at least $100 million.
Hurley’s success in the college ranks speaks for itself after back-to-back national titles. The Lakers, though, also value his work developing players and, specifically, are reportedly excited about the work he could do with Austin Reaves, Max Christie and Rui Hachimura.
It’s a surprise to be this enveloped with the pending decision of a head coach who, 72 hours ago, we did not have any care or thought in the world about. It’s been a lot to take in and process in that time frame.
Alas, though, the Lakers are less than a day away from having a lot of clarity, and potentially a new hire, for the team’s head coach position.
