A under-the-radar transfer with some intrigue

Cameron Sheffield, who played three years at Rice, has opted to transfer to Duke.

He’s a 6-6 guard from Alpharetta, Georgia, about 40 minutes from Sion James’s hometown of Sugar Hill. There’s a pretty good chance they've played ball together at some point and of course saw each other in the American.

Sheffield averaged 7.6 PPG, 6.1 boards and shot 37 percent from three point range in 2022-23. He sat out last season with a foot injury. He did start about half of his games but on the bright side, he has two seasons left. Initially he’s going to provide depth but who knows what the future holds. He could find a nice role and build on that.

Sheffield is Duke’s fourth transfer, joining 6-8 Malik Brown (Syracuse), 6-6 Mason Gillis (Purdue) and 6-6 Sion James (Tulane).

To the best of our knowledge, he’s the third Cameron to play in Cameron (for Duke) behind Cam Reddish and Canadian Cameron Hall, who played for Duke in the 1970’s before transferring.

Duke’s size continues to amaze. Both Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster are 6-5 and they’re the little guys in t his group. You just know somewhere, Jim Boeheim is itching to call Jon Scheyer and be the 2-3 Zone Whisperer.
