Trivia and history all rolled up into one

We’ve seen a couple of earlier “where are they now” videos about McDonald’s All-American teams and they’re fun. This one is from the 1980 team.

That year marked the end of the Bill Foster era at Duke and the dawning of the K era, though not many people realized how good he would become. Certainly the recruits didn’t: none of the guys from the 1980 McDonald’s game chose Duke though one guy later told us he kind of wished he had.

We got to know the late Bret Bearup a little and while he told us some crazy stories about his time at Kentucky, he also said once that he wished he had gone to Duke instead. He was a good guy.

Also on the 1980 team: Sam Perkins, Matt Doherty, Doc Rivers, Derek Harper, Vern Fleming and a bunch of guys you never heard of and no one really remembers.

Still, it’s interesting to see where people’s live went and what they did, though this video is probably kinder to Matt Doherty than he deserves.
