This is a big deal.

Duke legend and current Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley picked a tough job. ASU is a large school leaving one great, disappearing conference (the PAC-12) for another (the Big 12) that’s also outstanding in basketball, yet the Sun Devils have never been able to sustain success for long. That their hated rival Arizona has been doing it since the 1980’s makes it that much worse.

Hurley took a major step towards improving things Friday as he gained a commitment from former Kentucky commit Jayden Quaintance, who is the highest-rated recruit in Arizona State history.

To an extent it’s a homecoming: although he went to high school at Raleigh’s Word of God Academy, Quaintance’s family moved to Phoenix before he started high school.

ASU’s incoming class is very well regarded. The whole this one is #1, this one is #7 is ridiculous. No one knows until they leave and now they might leave at any time for all sorts of reasons.

Still, Hurley has a highly promising class and several transfers as well. He has the tools to build a very outstanding team and we hope he does.
