Jonathan Kuminga could fetch more than $30 million per year in free agency

0 14
The most important was Jonathan Kuminga, who just wrapped up a career year and is eligible for an extension this summer. Kuminga’s potential to build on his breakout 2023-24 campaign—in which he averaged 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 74 games—is one of the Warriors’ most realistic avenues toward raising their ceiling as a team. But for as much as Kuminga’s athleticism provides a necessary jolt to the Warriors’ beautiful game, his decision-making occasionally leaves the coaching staff scratching their heads or opting to turn to Wiggins in crucial moments. The Warriors brass has valued Kuminga highly in recent years, but extension negotiations will be telling, as his public complaints about his playing time earlier this season suggest that he and the Warriors may not see eye to eye about his role. Some analysts believe Kuminga could fetch more than $30 million per year on the open market, a figure that would make him the second-highest-paid player on Golden State’s roster.

Halftime
*Steph Curry 5 points, Klay Thompson 0.
*Possession battle: Kings 9 offensive rebounds. Warriors 9 turnovers. Shot attempts: Kings 52, Warriors 39.
*But Kings lead went from 16 to 4 because of a Kuminga surge and some 2Q GSW stops.
*Keegan Murray: 16 points – 11:17 PM

Kings had a 14 point lead in that half, they lead the Warriors 54-50 at the break. Jonathan Kuminga gave Golden State a spark with 12 points to lead GSW. Kings get 16 from Keegan Murray, although he was held to just two points in the second quarter. – 11:16 PM
Kendra Andrews @kendra__andrews
After all of that, the Kings hold just a narrow 54-50 lead halftime. 16-6 GSW run to close the half. Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga lit the spark for the Warriors, and now momentum is shifting their direction. – 11:16 PM

It’s quite a revelation watching Kuminga try to create a shot at the end of the clock instead of CP or Podz. Warriors should look for him more in that situation. – 11:04 PM

Welcome, Mr. Kuminga. The Warriors look a half step away from being blown out, but thanks to this spurt, it’s a manageable 48-40 game – 11:04 PM

That’s six straight points for Kuminga. The Kings are sagging off him. Two jumpers and then two athletic for Sabonis

More on this storyline

Anthony Slater: Jonathan Kuminga is extension eligible this summer: “Oh, wow. I didn’t even think of that.” On his future: “I love it here.” pic.twitter.com/I0i5gGwMAo -via Twitter @anthonyVslater / April 17, 2024
“I learned the pace of the game,” Kuminga told Andscape. “CP is one of the guys who is so poised in the way he plays the game. He brings so much knowledge to the court and just life.” Podziemski told Andscape: “CP is great. He breaks things down so much to a basic level that anyone can understand it. I feel like my IQ was pretty advanced for a rookie. So, the conversations that we had about basketball, things that can help me in my future — little things like 2-for-1s and 3-for-2s, tendencies — all that kind of stuff that he poured into me this year is going to help me going forward.” -via Andscape / April 17, 2024
Kuminga would have the most appeal, but the Warriors’ brain trust remains very high on his potential, sources said; he is eligible for an extension this summer. (His early-season playing time was a subject of much healthy debate in Golden State — and across the league, sources said.) -via ESPN / April 17, 2024
