Donovan Mitchell on dealing with injuries: 'You go from MVP talks to then you're hurt and people forget about you'

0 5
That’s when he finally gave in and shut it down, receiving a platelet-rich-plasma injection. He missed seven consecutive games and 13 of the next 15. “There’s always going to be trials and tribulations,” Mitchell said. “… Look at this year, you go from MVP talks to then you’re hurt, and people forget about you. That’s just the nature of this. I’m not mad at that. People can say what they want to say. When you’re out and hurt, you’re not there. It’s just what happens. “You’ve got to continue to put your stamp on the game every chance you get. I feel like I’m one of the best players to play this game, so it’s about just continuing to go out there on a daily basis, working, showing it and proving it.”

#Cavs Donovan Mitchell knows he will be judged on one thing: Playoff success. After back-to-back first-round flameouts, he’s got plenty to prove.
“To be considered one of the best to play this game, I’ve got to do something when it matters most.”

#Cavs Donovan Mitchell has a resume that shimmers. But also has lofty goals. To someday be one of the best. To someday be the face of the NBA. None of it happens w/out playoff success — the barrier standing between him & greatness. Can he break it down?

7 years ago, #Cavs star Donovan Mitchell was with coach & mentor Johnnie Bryant, who told Mitchell to write down goals, no matter how lofty. Mitchell revealed one to @clevelanddotcom — becoming the face of the NBA:

The Cavs have decided to sit out five players, perhaps six, in today’s game vs. Charlotte. Donovan Mitchell (knee), Caris LeVert (knee), Sam Merrill (neck), Dean Wade (knee) and Ty Jerome (ankle) are out. Darius Garland (back) is doubtful. – 11:08 AM

More on this storyline

“Obviously, you’re judged by conference finals and finals. That’s my mindset. That’s kind of where I’m at and where my head is at,” Mitchell said. “First round, second round is cool. I’m taking it one round at a time. But my goal is to make the conference finals and get to the NBA Finals, you know what I mean? That’s what I’m judged on.” -via Cleveland Plain Dealer / April 16, 2024
Donovan Mitchell’s résumé shimmers. Five-time All-Star. Second Team All-NBA. Slam Dunk Champion — the first rookie to win the contest since Chicago high-flyer Zach LaVine. Rookie of the Year runner-up. Proud member of the exclusive 70-point club. One of the NBA’s pre-eminent scorers. But there’s something missing: playoff success. It’s a prerequisite to be considered one of the greats — and the prism through which Mitchell views himself. He’s headed back to that proving ground. “It definitely is something that fuels me,” Mitchell told cleveland.com in an extensive sit-down at his locker shortly after the Cavs officially clinched a playoff spot on Friday night. “This is what I want to be. This is why I work hard. I take the scrutiny. I take the praise. But in order for me to be considered one of the best to play this game, I’ve got to do something when it matters most. Individual performances are great. But team success has to come with it. That’s where I’m at in my career. “By any means necessary, we’ve got to get there. We’ve got to do it.” -via Cleveland Plain Dealer / April 16, 2024
