Ime Udoka on Jalen Green's emergence without Alperen Sengun: 'I think they can complement each other very well'

0 10
Mitty: Ime Udoka on why Alperen Sengun being out is not the reason for Jalen Green’s resurgence: “We wanted to really increase the pace and get the threes up and all those things don’t have anything to do with Alpi – When Jalen was struggling earlier in the year he had the same quality looks and Jalen started to read the game better – I think they can complement each other very well”.

There were 5 incorrect no calls in the final 2 minutes and OT of Rockets win at OKC, 3 favoring OKC, 2 benefitting Rockets. Missed calls included Jalen Green’s drive for the win in the last second of regulation. Previous missed call was on Jalen Williams’ missed shot to tie. – 4:56 PM

The greatest change since Sengun went down is not spacing or usage. It’s Houston’s speed.
If you want to argue that Green is benefiting from faster pace of play, I’m amenable to that. The logic tracks.
The spacing stuff is just so reductive and more importantly, wrong. – 12:59 PM

People who attribute Jalen’s success to “increased usage and spacing” due to Sengun’s absence just haven’t been watching the Rockets.
1. Green’s had a near-identical usage rate to Sengun all season long. Role and opportunity haven’t been an issue.
2. Houston was already playing… – 12:49 PM

1. Jalen Green’s been awesome.
He was already showing signs of growth this season as a defender, passer, and contact drawer, but now he’s combining it with absurd shot-making.
2. Folks need to stop framing this as a “since Alperen Sengun went down” run.
Green had his first… – 12:34 PM

I’m a bit confused about why I don’t see Jalen Green Most Improved Player odds up at most books. I don’t *think* he’s going to win but he obviously has the narrative momentum if Houston makes the play-in. – 8:59 AM

Ime Udoka said he “got a good glimpse” of the advantages of Jabari Smith Jr at center in summer league: “As long as it’s not a Jokic, Embiid, one of those true back-to-the-basket bigs, we feel really confident with him guarding them better than they can guard him.” – 6:45 PM

More on this storyline

To better contextualize its ending, it’s important to recall how Ignite began. The NBA launched the program in April 2020, with a commitment from top-ranked prospect Jalen Green, now the Rockets’ third-year guard who is spearheading Houston’s late-season playoff bid in the Western Conference. Ignite arrived on the heels of former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice leading a group investigation into the underworld of college basketball recruiting — a shadow game that also provoked an FBI probe into sneaker company and agency payola connections within numerous major NCAA programs. The NBA, too, watched a pair of highly touted prospects, LaMelo Ball and R.J. Hampton, depart for Australia’s National Basketball League before they would enter the 2020 NBA Draft. -via Yahoo! Enough hugs to go around, high fives, and even a smile from head coach Ime Udoka. The Rockets — players, coaches, team staffers and even the front office and ownership — all convened in the adjacent visitor’s space to revel in the victory. Udoka brought up the most important play of the evening — the drive from Jalen Green which led to a kick-out pass to a Smith corner triple with 21 seconds remaining in regulation. It was a sequence that displayed all of the ingredients Houston had been cooking with during this 10-game run: pace from Amen Thompson, decision-making from Green and trust in Smith even though he had yet to hit an outside shot all night. “It was lit,” Green said postgame. “Everybody was happy, celebrating, screaming. We fought for that one, worked hard. That’s how we should react after a game. We gonna celebrate our wins.” -via The Athletic / March 28, 2024
