Interesting article on the rule change

Nothing about March Madness has driven fans crazier than the sight of a defender flopping and flailing under the basket in the hope of drawing a charge. . . But when the NCAA tweaked the charge rule ahead of this season, it didn’t just help eliminate one of the game’s most infuriating and unwatchable plays. It led to the most efficient offensive season in recent history. . . The biggest reason for the boom isn’t the spectacular athletes or the rise of the 3-point shot. . . Before this season, the NCAA rules committee changed the so-called block-charge rule. . .

“The default used to be a charge, now it’s a block,” says Joe DeRosa, a retired college and NBA referee. “This is a monumental change for the good of the game.”

The article talks about how the rule changed from requiring the defender to be in position when the ballhandler leaves the ground to when the ballhandler plants to leap.

The result? Offensive fouls are down from 3.34 per game last season to 2.15 this season. Doesn't sound like much? That's a >35% reduction.

I for one think flopping at the rim like Duke defenders is not a baskeball play, that's soccer. Defenders should wall up and take the contact like a (wo)man. If you're the offense and you don't like contact, fade away. It's a contact sport. Move the charge circle even further out.
