[Men's Cross Country] Cornerstone Four-Peats as Men's Cross Country Champions
TOLEDO, Ohio - (Complete Results) - Cornerstone placed three runners in the top five and another two runners in the Top 15 to capture the 2022 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Men's Cross Country Championship by one point over Aquinas. The Golden Eagles scored 32 points at the 8K race, held at Ottawa Park Golf Course, hosted by Lourdes for their fourth consecutive title and fifth overall. The streak is the third longest in WHAC history, tying Siena Heights (1993-96). Aquinas holds the top two longest streaks with five (2011-15) and seven (2002-08).
Luke Pohl paced the Golden Eagles to their fourth consecutive title by winning the race in a time of 25:17.89. Pohl also won the meetin in 2020. Teammate Colten Covington and last year's individual champion Colten Covington crossed in second place with a time of 25:41.03. Jamin Thompson finished in fifth, Jalen Banfill in 11th, and Luke Koopman in 13th.
Aquinas made it the closest race since 1998 when Siena Heights bested Aquinas by one point) by placing all five runners in the Top 10 for 33 points and was led by Andrew Ireland in third place. Lawrence Tech finished third with 94 points as Conner Uppleger finished eighth. Indiana Tech scored 104 points for fourth place and UM-Dearborn rounded out the top 5 with a 157 points.
The top seven finishers were named First-Team All-Conference with finishers 8-14 receiving Second-Team All-Conference accolades. Cornerstone head coach Josh Neideck earned Coach of the Year. Isaac Sytsma of Indiana Tech was named Newcomer of the Year. The final award went to Eric Green of Lawrence Tech as he was named Champions of Character Coach.
