Sunday's Dayton vs VCU game

0 15
This is a huge game and sets the table for a potential showdown with Saint Louis. But don't overlook VCU because the Rams should be favored against the 12-1-1 (6-0-0) Flyers even though their record is 5-1-7 (3-0-2). The Rams have played a much tougher schedule with more impressive results.

VCU tied #2 Virginia on the road and the Cavs are 10-1-1 this year. The Rams also beat #13 Pitt 3-2 which is their only loss on the season (11-1-0). Former Flyer Landy Mertz is the leading scorer for Pitt. For comparison, Dayton got trashed by #16 Ohio State 4-0 and clobbered by #19 Tennessee 5-1 (preseason). So UD has nowhere near the body of work VCU brings to Sunday's game at Baujan Field. The best Flyer win is at Davidson and that's not in the same class as VCU's best results.

The Rams have dominated teams in the A10 when winning, and dominated in the ties. They generate a lot of shots and will force Dayton to be efficient and take advantage of their good looks. Given how UD loves to start matches in a fog and not overwhelm opponents with pressure, Im not real optimistic about this one -- especially if UD gets down a goal. We shall see however. Much of what has held us back this year has been self-induced mistakes and low energy. Sounds crazy to say when the team is 12-1-1 but you have to take it in the context of the strength of schedule. In a number of matches we did just enough to sneak by despite being a heavy favorite.

I want to be pleasantly surprised and see us be the best version of ourselves on Sunday.
