The Glen Luss Glasgow Rocks took on the Cheshire Phoenix in an all-important BBL Trophy Semi-Final first leg tie, with both teams fighting for the place in the final, which will be played at the Emirates Arena on Sunday 20th March. Rocks took the victory 102-90, giving them a 12-point aggregate advantage going into the second leg, this Sunday, in Cheshire. Boban Jacdonmi was once again the standout performer alongside Jordan Johnson for the victorious side, despite the fact the whole team showed out and played well.

An early Namon Wright corner 3 got the game going, giving him the first points of the contest. Their early lead didn’t last long, as Rocks’ high flyer Jordan Harris matched with a corner 3 of his own. The first quarter, as a whole, remained end to end, and offensively focused, the Rocks came out of the first 10 minutes with a closely fought 7-point lead, 27-20.

Going into the second quarter, the pace remained much of the same fast paced we saw in the first, however, both teams showed elements of great passing play on several occasions. The fans brought Gareth Murray’s side on as they expanded their  lead going into the locker rooms to 11 points, 54-43. A Teddy Okereafor 3-pointer in the dying seconds ended the first half. Rocks’ lead after the first 20 minutes was thanks to an all-round team effort, with every player who touched the court making their way onto the scoresheet.

Coming out of the locker rooms, Rocks started as they hoped to go on, with Jordan Harris scoring another tough layup in the opening 20 seconds, adding to his many from the first half. The Rocks and Phoenix both had several high intensity plays on both ends of the floor in the third. Going into the final ten minutes, the score was in favour of the home team by 15 points, 80-65.

In the last quarter, as the Rocks hoped to keep their earned lead going into the second leg, they did exactly that, and concluded the victory in a fast-paced manner despite Phoenix’s best efforts. Although a few plays didn’t go well and there were a few overturned decisions by the officials, the performance still proved enough to get a result from the first leg of the contest. Jaycee Hillsman’s 3-pointer with 3 seconds left put the Rocks over the 100 point mark.

Overall, the whole Rocks roster played solid, with 5 players reaching double digits in scoring. This team energy gave them a 12-point lead upon the final buzzer, 102-90. However, there’s still a lot of work to do before qualifying for the hometown final, as Gareth Murray’s men travel to Cheshire on Sunday for the second leg of the semi-final.
