[Men's Basketball] Voyles & O'Campo Lead Hawks Second Half Comeback Over Doane

0 30

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A huge second-half comeback propelled the San Diego Christian College Hawks past the visiting Doane University Tigers by a score of 64-61 on Wednesday evening at the Kroc Center. The win was the Hawk's second in three games and moves their record to 2-9 on the season.

SDCC's K'lon Williams started the game with a huge dunk and the battle was on. The Hawks would go toe-to-toe with the Tigers and show their team philosophy. In fact, eight different San Diego Christian shooters would contribute on the scoreboard in the first half.

With just 3:30 left to play in the first, Elijah Jackson would put in a layup to get the Hawks to within one point of Doane. The remainder of the half would be all Tigers however with the visitors outscoring their host 10-4 and taking a 7 point lead into the locker room.

Josh O'Campo would get San Diego Christian's comeback started in the second half scoring a layup to fire up the team. O'Campo's defense would be what ultimately got the team back on track however continually pestering the Tigers and causing them to make bad decisions that led to turnovers.

The offense would come from the hot-shooting Dillon Voyles. After tallying only one field goal for two points in the first half, Voyles could seemingly score at will in the second. Shooting 6 for 8 from the floor hitting 4 of 5 treys and adding 4 of 4 from the free-throw line, Voyles would finish as the game's leading scorer with 22. O'Campo would be SDCC's second leader with 9 points.

Coach Dwayne Cosby was pleased with the performance of his team, "Tonight was a great team win.  We paid great attention to the defensive end. We got key contributions from a lot of guys, in particular, Josh O'Campo and Dillon Voyles. Josh's defense I thought was the game changer and for me, he was a player game. Dillon's 22 points were much needed but Josh's contribution across the board was just invaluable."

He continued, "Basketball is a microcosm of life and how you do in life and I am proud of how my guys have dealt with the adversity of our season so far. I continue to tell them to keep the faith, be diligent, be perseverant and tonight it paid off with a much-needed win. Defensively I have been asking for a bigger investment from all of our guys and have also asked them to pay attention to the details. Tonight we had guys play that way and it gave us extra possessions by executing our defense. We have a tough test coming up from Life Pacific who is always well prepared and probably a top three shooting team in our conference. Their strengths are our deficiencies, so we will prepare, improve and be ready for battle on Saturday."
