Sports briefs: Dominican women win home opener

Riley Friauf posted team highs with 22 points and 14 rebounds as the Dominican University women’s basketball team pulled out a 72-70 victory against Humboldt State in the home opener on Wednesday.

The Penguins led throughout the fourth quarter but pulled within three points with 16 seconds left. Alaiyah San Juan made one of two free throws to make it a two-score game.

Jazmine Barnes scored 15 points for the Penguins (2-1). San Juan and Camryn Figueroa scored eight points each.

• Jayden Davis paced COM with 12 points and seven rebounds in a 68-34 loss against Shasta on Thursday.
  The Mariners (1-4) struggled with turnovers, coughing the ball up 30 times against Shasta. COM was limited to 26% shooting for the game and just 20% from downtown.

Men’s basketball

Jorden Josephs and Anthony Dennis scored in double figures as Dominican fell 68-54 on the road against Cal State East Bay on Wednesday.

Josephs had a team-high 13 points while Dennis scored 12 for the Penguins (1-2). Josephs also had a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Penguins were limited to 2-for-11 shooting beyond the arc while East Bay made 10 of 25 3-point attempts.

Girls basketball

Noku Mukukula posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to power San Domenico to a 57-30 victory against John Swett on Wednesday.

Lily Reeser also stood out for the Panthers by scoring 12 points and coming away with five steals.

Girls soccer

Junior Abby Yates and freshman Mia Sandoval had goals as Novato opened the season with a 2-1 victory against Ukiah on Thursday.

Maggie Childers played the ball in to set up the first goal. Yates got a flick on and Sandoval finished the play with the goal. Yates scored the second goal on a solo run.

• Ava Jorgensen scored a pair of goals and had an assist to lead Terra Linda to a 7-1 victory against Healdsburg on Wednesday. Annamarie Brody, Chippy Taylor, Kaya Lash, Sonia McKenzie and Sadie Reiter also had goals for TL.
