Match Report: Rocks secure their place in the BBL Cup Quarter Finals

0 17

The Glen Luss Glasgow Rocks edged out the Newcastle Eagles in the BBL Cup as an impressive first half performance helped to secure the home win despite an Eagles comeback in the third.

Starting off the first quarter it was Newcastle who opened up the scoring in the game as they hit a three pointer before Jordan Johnson set up Ali Fraser for a big dunk, giving the Rocks their first two points of the game.

Despite this it was the Eagles who started the game off in better scoring form as they took an early 11-4 lead until Ali Fraser showed nice feet work, getting to the rim where he finished with a layup, which was then followed up by a steal and made layup from Gareth Murray.

A tight contest to start the game as back-to-back threes from Jaycee Hillsman and Jordan Harris gave the Rocks their first lead in the game. Despite this, after the first quarter it was Newcastle who lead the Glen Luss Glasgow Rocks by 28-25 in what was a tight first quarter.

To start the second quarter off again it was the Eagles who kicked off the scoring in the quarter as four quick points were quickly cancelled out by a corner three from Jonny Bunyan, who followed that up by hitting another three, getting the Rocks to within one on the scoreboard, however the Eagles quickly hit back with a three of their own, keeping hold of the slender lead they had.

Both teams continued to go back and forth on the scoreboard in the second quarter leading into halftime as seven points from Hillsman and four made threes from Bunyan in the quarter saw the Rocks take a nine point lead in the contest, the largest lead in the game so far. Going into the interval the Rocks continued their impressive second quarter scoring whilst holding the Eagles to just 13 points in the quarter, at halftime the Rocks lead 56-41.

Starting off the second half it was the Eagles who came out fast as they went on a devastating 15-0 run to open up the third quarter tying the game up before Ali Fraser scored the Rocks first points of the second half, almost five minutes into the third quarter.

After this the scoring went back and forth in the quarter with the Eagles outscoring the Rocks 28-14 in the quarter, however, an Ali Fraser three pointer right at the end of the third maintained the Rocks lead in the game but it was much smaller than what it was going into halftime, going into the last quarter the Rocks lead 70-69.

Going into the fourth quarter it was Ali Fraser who continued to keep his team in the game as he scored the Rocks first four points of the quarter before Jordan Harris finished at the rim with a driving layup. The first half of the quarter was back and forth between the two teams, however, an emphatic dunk from Jordan Harris gave the Rocks a seven point lead which was again cut back down to three.

The fourth and final quarter of the game proved to be an intense and cagey battle between the two teams, however it was the Rocks who executed better down the stretch as a Jordan Johnson three sealed the win for the home team, the Rocks win 92-84.

MVP of this game was Rocks big-man, Ali Fraser, as he finished the contest with an impressive double-double, tallying up 23 points and 13 rebounds.

Next up for the Glen Luss Glasgow Rocks is another home game in the BBL Cup against the Cheshire Phoenix on October 17th for a 7:30pm tip-off.
