Prep roundup: Hunter Hernandez leads Mitty to a rout of O’Dowd in girls basketball

Welcome back to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) prep roundup. Here’s the best of Saturday’s action in boys and girls basketball, baseball and softball:

Girls basketball

No. 1 Archbishop Mitty 78, No. 4 Bishop O’Dowd 26

The gap this spring between Archbishop Mitty and at least one team in the Bay Area News Group’s Top 5 is pretty decisive.

Saturday, the top-ranked Monarchs traveled to Oakland for a matchup against No. 4 Bishop O’Dowd and returned to San Jose with a one-sided victory.

The Monarchs led 18-10 after the first quarter and 47-18 at halftime.

Mitty allowed eight points in the second half to improve to 4-1.

Hunter Hernandez scored 20 points to lead the Monarchs. Olivia Williams added 13 points and Siena Guttadauro and Marley Langi each finished with 11 points.

Since opening the season with a 73-63 loss to St. Mary’s of Stockton, Mitty has outscored its opponents by an average of 50.5 points per game.

O’Dowd (3-2) was coming off decisive victories of its own. The Dragons had beaten Alameda 81-21 and last year’s NorCal Open Division runner-up St. Joseph Notre Dame 74-47.

Kelly Tumlin had 27 points for California (1-5).

San Ramon Valley led by 10 at halftime and stretched its advantage to 14 at the end of the third quarter. The Wolves doubled the margin in the fourth.

No. 10 Miramonte 66, No. 9 Heritage 64

In a game that was tight throughout, Miramonte, playing at home in Orinda, edged Heritage in a matchup of undefeated teams.

Julia Miller (23 points), Jordan Allred (13 points) and Daniella Resch (11 points) led the way for Miramonte, which improved to 6-0.

Heritage fell to 4-1.

Today, the Matadors play host to No. 11 Carondelet, now led by Miramonte’s former coach, Kelly Sopak.
