Golden State Warriors vs. Charlotte Hornets Predictions and Picks
The Warriors lost last night as a five-point favorite in Orlando, and that creates a great bounceback spot tonight against the Hornets. This will essentially be a homecoming for Steph Curry, who has roots in the Charlotte area stemming from his father’s time with the Hornets in addition to his college days at Davidson. Curry has spoken glowingly about what it means to return there, and motivation is never an issue whenever he gets the opportunity.
In assessing these teams, I think the Warriors are the better side, but I don’t think the Hornets are too far off the pace, particularly if LaMelo Ball continues to improve over the course of the season. Charlotte is one of the latest NBA teams that was forced to postpone some games due to COVID-19. They last played six days ago, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a bit of rust for them in this matchup. That could prove to be a disadvantage for them, not just offensively but also in their defensive sets and, more specifically, how they handle Golden State’s pick and roll on the perimeter.
The Hornets are 28th in the league, allowing 14.9 three-point field goals per game and 40.5 three-point attempts per game. Defending the three-point line is all about commitment. The fact that opponents have so many attempts suggests that this has been identified as a clear weakness of the Hornets. That should play right into the Warriors’ hand as they’re ranked sixth with 14.6 three-point field goals per game and fifth with 38.7 attempts per game.
The Warriors’ motto is to continue shooting even when you’re struggling from behind the arc. We recently saw an example of that on Wednesday against the Miami Heat when Curry had just one three-point field in his first nine attempts but connected on four of his next 11 attempts, including two three-point field goals in overtime to help seal the game.
The Warriors are 4-1 ATS on the road against Charlotte, and I like Curry and company to bounce back in this spot as a short favorite.
The Pick: Warriors -2
