Quick Reaction: Raptors 100, Celtics 122

Really aggressive early, but not too productive in the post or on the drive. Committed a few bad turnovers trying to force things. Also was in foul trouble. He lacked oomph on his drives and couldn’t reach a higher gear when he hit the back end of the defense. Just didn’t have it, in any way.

Did a cool thing or two. Met Theis at the rim in one cool moment that forced the center into a travel. But Anunoby is not the player to determine Toronto’s floor. He can help out with the ceiling, but when Toronto is mixed up in every way, Anunoby is not the player to settle the team down. This loss wasn’t on him.

Was the one to finally stabilize the Raptors after a bricky start, hitting a post fadeaway to put the Raptors on the board. Then committed two fouls, hit the bench, and committed a dumb offensive foul for his third immediately upon re-entering the game. Like everyone else, his shot wasn’t there.

Seemed frustrated early. Tried to probe and didn’t find much, but eventually slithered his way through the gaps and started taking some charges (of course). He started a few small runs, but it of course wasn’t enough. Lowry did the thing where he probes into the paint, saw size, and kicked the ball out to no advantage. That would have been better if Toronto could have done something with those possessions, but they couldn’t. Boston has elite guard defenders, and that probably means Lowry won’t average 20 points against the Celtics. Still, not the worst game from Lowry, considering.

One of Toronto’s only positives. Played his usual fantastic defense, especially in a few possessions erasing Jayson Tatum in the post. He didn’t shoot well, but he played a good enough game. One of the only ones.

Had a lot of trouble hanging defensively with Gordon Hayward, jumping at a shot-fake, and letting Hayward blow past him in a straight line drive just in the first quarter. Had a few short ones count early, which helped, and then he settled in on defense a bit. Still, his jumper wasn’t falling, and Powell lacks a lot of his high-end value when his jumper isn’t dropping.

Came into the game and tried to do maybe 50 percent too much. Hijacked the offense, to Toronto’s detriment, and even though he got vertical once to erase Jaylen Brown at the rim, didn’t do much beyond that. Hit some jumpers in garbage time, which, hey, maybe is gonna get the guy back on track. He’s been bad in the bubble, but he will continue to get time as Pat McCaw has left the bubble with injury.

Came into the game with 30 seconds left in the first half and immediately hit a 3, then had a triple hit in his eye. That’s the way the cookie crumbles. He also played in garbage time.

Came into the game and tried to do maybe 25 percent too much. Committed bad turnovers, and got lost on defense over- or under-helping. Played well in garbage time, but that shouldn’t matter.

His defense was disengaged, and his offense was less reliable than usual. Had trouble corralling Jayson tatum in the pick-and-roll, which isn’t really something bigs should be expected to do, but still. He missed some looks that are usually automatic for him. Like, all the shots. He also didn’t block out. Boucher took his minutes to close the first half, and he should have taken more minutes from Ibaka, to be honest. Ibaka left the game after getting poked in the eye by Hayward.

A lot of garbage time, and he did a solid job creating space around the arc. Obviously not what matters, but the loss clearly wasn’t on him.

Yay Paul Watson! Not hit best game, but he’s fun, and we got to see him play six full minutes.

Got himself a technical foul early in the second quarter, and Toronto responded with a stop and layup in transition. But Toronto’s problems were manifold, and Nurse didn’t right the ship. He tried playing Powell a little bit with the starters — in place of Anunoby — but with Powell’s jump-shot wayward, it probably created more defensive problems for the team than it solved on the offensive end. Also tried to play without a center to jump-start the team, but didn’t work either. Look, Nurse tried things. None of it worked. It’s hard to know how much of that to pin on a coach, but it’s hard to say Nurse did a good job after a game like that. He tried, which is not true of all his players tonight.
