NBA 2020 Draft -- Keep 1 High Pick, More Mid-Level Picks, or Other?

0 13

The 2020 NBA Draft Combine is scheduled for May 21-24, 2020, and the 2020 NBA Draft is set for June 26, 2020. GSW is currently on track to have a high (likely 1-3) pick in the 2020 draft. The question posed here is specific to this 2020 NBA draft ... would GSW be better served with the current High Pick, or possibly more Mid-Level Picks, or some other option?

While the attraction of a shiny new draft prospect each year is alluring, there are few years with truly "generational" talents . Subjectively, of the currently active players, only L.James, K.Durant, G.Antetokounmpo, and Z.Williamson can truly be considered "generational" physical / athletic talents, and S.Curry is a "historical" skill talent. In the many years where "generational" talents are not available, the draft year will nonetheless provide high and even foundational performers. The 2020 NBA draft appears to be draft year without a "generational" physical / athletic talent, but does appear to have many athletic / skill combinations which can develop into high performers. If the 2020 is indeed an NBA draft without a "generational" physical / athletic talent, perhaps multiple mid-level draft picks or some other option may be more advantageous than a single high 1-3 pick ...

Currently, the most highly productive and foundational active "Stars" are top 15 draft picks (G.Antetokounmpo and K.Leonard are both 15th picks). With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, there are many still active high 1-3 draft picks who are less than foundational in today's NBA (i.e. D.Howard; E Kanter; D.Favors; A.Wiggins; J.Okafor). Many of the disappointing 1-3 draft picks may have been the best option for a poor draft year, but they would not be worthy of the higher salary cap space commitment in today's NBA. In such cases, multiple lower picks may be just as effective, but with lower cap space costs. Hindsight also shows that even post-15th draft picks include many strong high performers, and a few possibly foundational picks (i.e. Jr.Holiday/17th; J.Butler/30th; P.Siakam/27th; N.Jokic/41st; R.Gobert/27th).

The permutations for what GSW can do this year are endless, and a few of the options are noted in the poll below ... so what should GSW do with their roster and this year's currently single high 2020 Draft pick? While in B.Myers we trust, comments are of interest, and are invited ...
