SLU Postgame Decompression

0 20
Some of my thoughts and observations:

- Kudos to SLU and Coach Ford for what we hope was their "best shot"

- Impeccable game plan and prep for Travis and executed nearly flawlessly by SLU

- Relentless on the boards. Take away ANY and ALL fast break baskets. Don't let them dunk the basketball. Make Toppin play with his back to the basket. And it worked like a charm.

- Dayton was visibly confused and frustrated with SLU...…..and the refs

- There was just no flow to the offense. No space or room to cut. They were awesome against Obi. He's not the same player with his back to the basket for 80% of the game. He needs, as do we as a team, space and SLU took this away very well.

- The atmosphere was as intense and intimidating as Dayton will play all year

- SLU free throw shooting. I have no words. French air-balled 3 and banked one in.

- Perkins with a bit of a coming out party for SLU. I didn't see that coming.

- Great seeing so many Dayton alums form the area at the game and wearing RED

- Toppin struggled most of the game. Mikesell had a rough one in the box score and was saddled with some bad luck and at least two crap foul calls. Landers continues to impress and make plays, even while being limited in the first half. Watson, sans his late turnover, was solid again as well.

- Clutcher. Ice water flowing in the veins. I met his dad and a few other family members randomly on the street as I was walking back to the office from lunch. Group of gents wearing UD gear, I asked "Are you in from out of town for the game?" Sure are. "Where are you from?" Memphis. "You must be Crutcher fans." I'm his Dad.

- Some nice moments from Jordy and Cohill. Progress. I was skeptical about Cohill's transition three attempt (not his shot really, at least not now), but in hindsight, I like that he's willing to pull that trigger in a big game like this. Confidence and undeterred.

- Chatman. I hope he's coachable and Grant is working with him in the film room and tutoring him everyday. I think his decisions are causing the biggest problems for him.

- SLU played arguably their best game of the season, sans the free throws. Dayton appeared to play one of their worst games of the season, kudos to SLU for dictating the pace and style of the game, YET we still got out with a win.

- I'll be surprised if SLU will be able to repeat this (level of play and dictating flow) outside of Chaifetz.

Some one liners and quips, courtesy of yours truly that I enjoyed sharing with my SLU friends during the game. I was struggling to enjoy the game due to our performance for most of it and the ribbing I was getting most of the game. I had a lot of fun with it and kept a smile on my face most of the game.

To the young boy sitting in front of me, after Obi redirected French's shot about 30 feet. "Son, that right there is the difference between playing in the NBA and playing in Europe."

To my season ticket buddies in the row behind me "So glad we could fill your arena for you."

"When did SLU launch their Rugby program?"

"Dayton Basketball...…..everything St. Louis U ASPIRES to be."
