High school hoops: Five things to watch

1 Colonie will put its eight-game winning streak on the line Friday when the Garnet Raiders play host to Shenendehowa in a Suburban Council girls' basketball clash. Colonie (9-1, 5-0), ranked No. 17 in Class AA, opened the season with a win against Horseheads (80-71) and a loss to Oneonta (51-48). Shenendehowa (8-0, 4-0) is No. 3 in the Class AA state poll.

2 It is father vs. son Friday night in Wasaren League boys' basketball play when Hoosick Falls (coached by Mike Lilac Jr.) takes on Hoosic Valley (coached by Alex Lilac). Hoosick Falls (8-1, 4-0) has won 54 straight league games after beating Greenwich 78-61 Tuesday. The Indians (4-2, 3-1) suffered a 62-49 setback against Waterford.

3 Two undefeated girls' basketball squads in the Patroon Conference meet Friday to settle early-season supremacy. Maple Hill (8-0, 6-0), ranked No. 3 in Class C, travels to take on Hudson (6-0, 6-0). Both squads easily prevailed in league play Wednesday: Maple Hill beat Cairo-Durham 67-20 and Hudson cruised past Rensselaer 74-37.

4 Queensbury, the only team to defeat Gloversville this season, hits the road Friday to face Glens Falls in Foothills Council boys' basketball play. Glens Falls (8-1, 6-1), ranked No. 8 in the Class B state poll, lost 60-53 Dec. 6 against Gloversville (7-1, 6-1). Queensbury (7-2, 6-1) defeated Gloversville 80-70 Dec. 20.

5 The Western Athletic Conference girls' basketball picture becomes a bit more in focus Friday night in Delanson when Berne-Knox-Westerlo (7-0, 5-0) meets Duanesburg (8-2, 4-1) in a battle of state-ranked Class C squads. Berne-Knox-Westerlo, ranked No. 16, is led by senior guard Taylor Meacham and sophomore forward Alexis Wright. The 11th-ranked Eagles feature sophomore guard Madison Meyer (990 career points) and eighth-grade guard Allison O'Hanlon.
