Coughlin's life touched the campuses of both Siena and St. Bonaventure, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1970. His memory will be honored on Tuesday night when the Saints and Bonnies meet in the renewal of the Franciscan Cup men's basketball rivalry at Times Union Center.
In fact, the trophy has been renamed after Coughlin and will be presented to the winning team after the game. Before tip-off, Coughlin's family will come on the court and Mullen will say a few words in his honor.
Mullen said Coughlin learned the Franciscan ideals in high school at Bishop Timon in Buffalo before carrying them to St. Bonaventure and later Siena.
"I think he was a great bridge figure between both schools," Mullen said.
