If we don't get a max, how should the cap be split across multiple positions?

0 4

If the Lakers do not sign a max player for whatever reason, they will need to use their remaining cap space to target a 1, a 2, and a 5. Ideally, they can get 3 players good enough to justify pushing Kuzma to the 6th man role.

Looking at the HoopsHype top FA list, I'm assuming we can't afford any of the top 15. Which means I'm skipping all the bigs from 11-15: Vuc, DMC, Randle, Horford, and MGasol. So past that point, the 5's are (numbers are hoopshype rank):

17. BroLo
18. DAJ
32. WCS (r )
33. Valanciunas (po)
34. Kanter
46. TBryant (r )
47. Whiteside (po)
48. RLopez
53. Ed Davis
56. McGee
63. Dedmon

The 2's are:

23. DGreen
24. JJRedick
35. TRoss
43. JLamb
45. Satoransky
51. Matthews
52. Bullock
54. Rivers
62. KCP

The 1's:

19. Brogdon (r )
22. Dragic
29. Rubio
30. Rose
36. Rozier
37. EPayton
38. Beverly
40. Collison
49. Rondo
59. IT

So pick one from each group, and they probably can't afford to pick the top choice from all 3 groups. And not that their ranking will correlate to their salary, but I'm guessing if you add up the ranking number of your 3 picks and it's less than 80, we probably can't afford them. (i.e., BroLo, DGreen, and Brogdon ranks add up to 59, probably too expensive).

Presumably, they can do better than last year's lineup of Rondo, KCP, and McGee. I'd go for BroLo, TRoss, and Beverly.
