Campbell’s Chris Clemons Passes 3,000 Career Points

0 17

Some ACC coaches probably are feeling pretty foolish about now

The ACC has had some wonderful small guards over the years. From Monte Towe to Spud Webb, Muggsy Bogues and Boogie McIntyre, the ACC has always found room for talented short players.

Currently the conference can boast Miami’s 5-7 Chris Lykes and Virginia’s 5-9 (if you buy that) Kihei Clark.

The ACC does not have Chris Clemons though and that’s too bad.

On Saturday, Clemons, who chose Campbell after finishing high school in Raleigh, passed the 3,000 point barrier for career scoring.

Among the guys he passed?

Oscar Robertson.

We’re not suggesting he’s as good as the Big O. But could he start for Wake Forest? Clemson? Boston College?

Of course he could.

He would have been great at NC State too.

And consider this: the Wolfpack - this goes to Mark Gottfried, not Kevin Keatts - not only missed on hometown product Clemons, but also on Jerome Robinson, who went to Boston College and became a lottery pick.

Most coaches don’t use all their scholarships. So why not take a chance on a small guy? The worst thing that could happen is that you get a useful practice player.

And if things work out, you get a Towe, a Bogues or, perhaps, a Clemons.
