Cavs trade Rodney Hood to Trail Blazers

Hood leaves after about a year with the Cavs.

Rodney Hood’s time in Cleveland is at an end.

As first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cavs have dealt Hood to the Trail Blazers in exchange for Nik Stauskas, Wade Baldwin and two future second-round picks. Per Woj, the picks are in the 2021 and 2023 drafts.

Hood had to agree to the trade, as he was signed to his qualifying offer. In Portland, he joins a Blazers team in the playoff picture in the Western Conference and he gets to play alongside Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum. Perhaps it will help Hood, who was a disappointment the Cavs, to be in a situation where isn’t a lead option like was with the Cavs.

Hood was originally acquired on Feb. 8 last season when the Cavs reset their roster at the trade deadline. He never quite settled in, however, and was out of the rotation for much of the playoffs before briefly reappearing in NBA Finals loss to the Warriors. This season, in 45 game, Hood averaged 12.2 points and two assists per game while shooting 42.7 percent from the field.

In Stauskas and Hood, the Cavs are not taking on any future salary. Stauskas, 25, will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year. Baldwin, 22, will be a restricted free agent in the summer. He was a first-round pick in 2016 by the Grizzlies, but ended up with the Trial Blazers after being waived. Both could be with Cleveland beyond this season, but it may depend on how the next few months play out and what other moves Koby Altman makes.

In trades this season, the Cavs have acquired seven draft picks in dealing out Hood, Sam Dekker, Kyle Korver and George Hill.
