Hella Warriors played hella well on the last night of 2018.

The Golden State Warriors ended their 2018 year in style, with a solid 132-109 thrashing of the Phoenix Suns.

Warriors Wonder Nominee: Steph Curry

34 points. 9 rebounds. 4 assists. 11-of-17 shooting from the field. 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. It was just unfair the way he ran Suns’ rookie De’Anthony Melton out of the gym. Is that what Allen Iverson and Steve Nash did to Curry when he was a rook? Education by humiliation? Is that where Curry learned rookie hazing?

Also, now I see the real reason Coach Steve Kerr won’t let us just dog teams to death with the Curry-Kevin Durant pick-and-roll. It’s because the play is just the most disrespectful strategy you can run in an NBA game. Take the two most efficient scorers of their generation and have them dance together in a focused but spontaneous tandem against two defenders who have to constantly communicate and move in step perfectly.

If the defenders play the situation perfectly they still end up in a one on one isolation against either 1.) The blinding quickness and electric creativity of the greatest shooter of all time or 2.) The towering menace of the aggressive, 7-foot, scoring addict with an unblockable shot.

Let’s see what happened to the Suns’ defenders when they were caught in the mix.

Honorable Mentions: It’s pretty great to watch Durant patiently wait for his opportunities to rip souls out of bodies. I sometimes lose track of the game as my eyeballs follow him calmly sprinting around the court, always prepared to make the right play or bail us out a bad possession.

His defenders are terrified to take their eyes off of him, and he uses that to draw multiple defenders and free some airspace for his teammates.

That’s how you sacrifice for your squad! Oh yeah, he also breezed his way to 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, 3-of-4 from three-point range.

Honorable Mention: Klay Thompson’s defense

Thompson set the tone from tipoff with his hounding defense of budding Phoenix star Devin Booker. He stuck to Booker like a shadow, bullying the youngster into rushed shots and poor decisions. Booker would go 6-for-15 shooting for the game. Thompson’s rugged defense ignited the energy for a Warriors team that would use it to weaponize some good ol’ joy.

Honorable Mention: Draymond Green’s playmaking

Green seems intent on leading the team in assists. He had another seven of ‘em against Phoenix, a game high. He also had a +20 plus/minus, trailing only +21 for Durant and Jonas Jerebko. When Green’s doing Green things the Warriors are tough to beat, folks.
