Zion: “Tre’s The Most Important Piece To Our Team” 

Like a lot of people we’ve been mesmerized watching Zion Williamson do things like threejects and running into backboards and doing things that guys his size should not be able to do. We’ve loved watching RJ Barrett go into alpha mode and have seen the glimpses of brilliance in Cam Reddish.

Yet in this article, Williamson says flatly that Tre Jones is the most important player on the team - and he’s right.

Jones is a superb point guard who puts an emphasis on ball pressure and running his team. We say sometimes that Duke can have four point guards on the fast break but that’s stretching it a bit.

Duke has three freshmen with point guard skills but one guy is in the driver’s seat and that’s Jones. He’s a superb guy on the break but what takes our breath away is just how close he can stick to his man without fouling. It’s almost an art form. We have the greatest respect for what he does on defense and the fierce intelligence he brings to the court. Having a guy like that makes everyone else buy in and also gives a ton of confidence because he knows what to do in a tight situation.

He’s probably the least noticed starter in many respects but watch him when he’s pursuing the ball up court. It’s magnificent.
